I was thinking - any Voltron deck is going to run a couple tutor spells like Steelshaper's Gift or Open the Armory. I like Sword of Once and Future to get a second use out of them, but doubling one in your hand is also sweet, and honestly not bad even if you just get the protection and power/toughness.

The biggest issue with the sword is that the others had innate evasion to actually get in hits with. Sure the protection from spells was nice based on colour, but the major allure was unblockable and thus letting you get the on hit triggers

The thing is protection from x colors allows you to deal damage since you can bypass creatures from said colors, so you can then trigger the second effect, this one doesn't help with that at all, protection is not just there to dodge removal. Still, it's a nice way to protect against removal and to get extra mana and value from spells.

At least the rest of the swords have upside when they *do* manage to get equipped. This one literally just feels like a worse lightning greaves.

Is anyone out there having trouble with their creatures getting blocked by instants or sorceries? This sword is such hot garbage I can’t imagine any reason you would ever want it. It’s pyromancer’s goggles, which is pretty terrible already, but you need to connect with a creature you didn’t give evasion to before you can use it. What weird deck wants this? It’s an artifact in your spell slinger deck that needs creatures to get through to work, and if you want to target those creatures with any of your spells your going to need to move the sword over first. This is bottom of the bulk bin trash! At least sword of once and future isn’t the worst sword in the cycle anymore.

And if you are relying on another card to get through, would it not be 1000 times better to run one of the other 5 cost instant and sorcery doublers? Ones without conditions that make them incredibly difficult to trigger?

While this doesn't work with his ability, I recently built a deck around Gale, Water deep prodigy + Scion of Halastar. All about playing spells to copy spells in your grave. But copying whatever I cast from hand is also a nice bonus.

Like this sword is gonna be fun in Commander sure, but it isn't outclassing most of the pre-existing swords. The fact that it can be chumped takes away one of the biggest advantages the other swords have.

That is a pretty bad take. Getting protection from instants and sorceries was kinda implied with the protection from colors already, and here it's going to be extremely difficult to connect your attack to benefit from the damage trigger. So it's interesting they're exploring new territories to keep on expanding the sword cycle, but in no way this one's better

This fits perfectly in my voltron zurgo helmsmasher deck bc it runs a good 15+ removal spells and his biggest weakness is removal on other ppls turns and it’s a pain to get hexproof easily in mardu beyond boots Though I can’t see it in any other theme than voltron since it has zero evasion and its contact effect is trash for what it costs. There’s already over a dozen copy effects for less mana and less hoop jumping not to mention even better ways to ramp.

I think this sword is really strong and definitely outclasses some of the swords in the cycle, but not Feast and Famine. Doubling your next instant/sorcery just isn’t as good as having an entire second turn’s worth of mana (and can only compare if you’re dumping all of your mana into doubling something like exsanguinate). The treasure and discard are pretty on par ribbons, but then F&F’s protection from green and black is significantly stronger than W&P’s instant/sorcery protection, since green and black are the most powerful colors in casual commander and the protection will simultaneously work as evasion and as general protection, whereas W&P only guards against single target removal (albeit more reliably)

So I have a Vadrik deck and ot doesn't have time to equip a sword and then swing and hope he gets through. There are plenty of cheaper copy spell effects and at least for how I've built vadrik, I'm already trying to win turn 4-6 so casting this on 3 would bog me down

Protection from instants and sorceries is just worse hexproof. It doesn't offer nearly the same level of protection as the other swords do. The second ability is the reason to run this. If your deck is making tokens it's good, but almost any deck would benefit from copying spells. It's just unfortunate that the sword doesn't make it easier to get that trigger by itself.
