Riding a GM Old Look bus to school

The 2020-21 school year is starting off as remote learning for our boys. Even though in-person schooling isn't happening they can't start the year without riding a bus to (home) school. When you own a bus you make that happen. It was just a short trip, probably less than 10 minutes total but worth every minute.

I loved the old GM buses from the 50's and 60's, with that screaming Detroit. There's still nothing like it. 😊

Wow! We had this same type of GM Old look and the small version in Cuba! They arrived in Cuba in the 1950's and were already in use! Excellent air suspension, they were automatic and super comfortable! They have the same number of windows with one small window before and after the rear door! Applause for GM designers!!! I remember one in particular with the number 1442 that went from Havana to Guanabo! ❤❤❤❤❤👋👋👋👋👋👋👋

As a college student I drove for the 'Campus Bus Service' at Kent State University in 1975-76 and got to drive this particular bus one time... I believe it was on a 'Stadium Loop.' Most people on campus knew it as the 'Graduate Bus.' At that time the 60 and 70 Series GMC New Looks were running Campus Loops; Stadium Loops; East Mains; and West Mains with the Old Looks used as trippers and backups... There was nothing like driving up the hill towards The Student Center on Lincoln St. by the bookstore with a full standing load - accelerator to the floor - and wondering if the Old Look you were driving was going to make it to the top of the hill (they always did.) I drove Stadium Loop one quarter; E.Main 2 quarters; and filled in as an ‘extra,’ occasionally. Loved it. Mike M. Any other KSU CBS drivers out there??

I also drove for CBS 72 - 74. Drove this bus and other old look buses and many of the new look. They had leased a few yellow and orange old looks from Cincinnati for a time. They were 40 footers and several inches wider than our own buses, I believe. No power steering, but fun to drive. Jim O.

Driving for CBS was great. I had heard from another CBS person that the Kent State bus program was one of THE most efficient bus transit systems in the world, next to Tokyo, Japan at that time - true or not I don’t know… Other than the head of the Campus Bus Service it was run entirely by Kent State students… It also was the highest paying campus job for students there was. I met so many people all over Kent from driving the bus routes that wherever I’d go in town somebody would recognize me. Too bad it still did not exist today…

My Dad drove these buses for Public Service Coordinated Transport which is now Transport of NJ. I too was bused to school on these and would love to hear what the horn sounds like on your model! Next time you go out for a drive can you sound the horn? Brings back so many great memories of my dad! Thanks so much!

I remember our city transit buses like these. They ran them into the late 70s/early 80s. I recall them being the smoothest and least rattly of all the buses on the road and a sweet nice diesel sound.

You have 2 of the very best buses GM Ever built. Former Transit bus Driver. Not telling what to do.... Your best bet set your mirrors so you can see side of bus length. It takes time and practice to do that. Turning the wheel push and pull method.... It builds up your muscles. On the New Look if it grinds in gear on a cold start. I use take my foot and go from Neutral to Drive very fast... Till it catches! Good Luck on all your work!!!!

@@Unit2345 Our Oldlook is like that too. We have told our driver to not even try it and to always shut it down when changing gears. Even then it sometimes will not be engaged when the engine is restarted.
@Unit2345
@Unit2345 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewsvideos8235 Makes you wonder what it is about these transmissions that make the shifting so difficult. In a manual that i have it described a technique that I've had more success with. Holding the gear selector lever against the right edge of the selector slot, move the lever towards the opposite gear desired, maybe about an inch, before there's any resistance. Hold it there for several seconds then quickly move it into the desired gear. It's not a guarantee but I've had pretty good results.

@@Unit2345 our trick when it was stubborn is to start it in neutral, shut it down, and just before the engine stops completely to put it in gear. Usually it works after that.

If it was a part of the Ohio bus museum collection. Then yes years of outdoor storage. Just make sure you empty and clean the air oil bath Flyers and remove the blower cover to inspect make sure it has no dirt and water damage and check the rack on the injectors before trying to start. I hate for you to have a run away engine. Good luck and God speed on both bus projects

I bought it straight from the KSU Campus Bus Service in 2003 and it sat outside until just a few years ago unfortunately. It was at the old Twin Coach factory location in Kent. In those years it just deteriorated unfortunately. Bummer
