My dad is in his early seventies and didn't feel comfortable anymore on a bike. But he still wanted to ride, alone and with me. So he looked at trikes from Harley or converted Honda Goldwings. Way to expensive, even second hand. Then I suggested an Can-am spider. At first he was not so sure, but after trying one he was sold. Got a nice second hand one and enjoys the wind in his face again. Feels secure and no need to move and balance a bike in his front yard. Simply reverses it while sitting on it. Even my mum is planning on joining him as passenger, like they used to before I was born. So no, it's not a bike, but for people like my dad it's close enough to have fun!

It really does sound a lot like riding a snowmobile, they're exhausting to ride as you're constantly fighting with the steering (snowmobiles also love to follow any little track in the snow, making it more of a fight). In the US these are popular with old folks who have gotten to the point where they can't ride their Harleys anymore.

My assessment on the suspension is most riders won’t wring the CanAm Spider out like you just did. On the other hand, since you didn’t seem to reach the limits due to road conditions, perhaps a couple extra inches of suspension travel would be very beneficial if properly tuned. Finally, I agree with your assessment that when you ride this machine hard it will give you a workout due to the forces at play with these 3 wheeled machines.

I got to take a 3 wheel endorsement class on a 600 ryker. Very surprising what those 3 wheel bikes can do. I agree that they are exhausting when you push them. They are a blast on a closed course. I was quite happy during the class that they wanted you to have clear understanding of the traction limits and therefore pushed us to turn at speed until we lost traction in a controlled setting. I think everyone who criticizes 3 wheel motorcycles should take the class. You will be shocked at how much fun you can have and how challenging they are to ride

There's a decent number of them here in Canada (home of Can-Am). The biggest drawback in my view is having three tire tracks and the width, making it very difficult to avoid potholes and bumps.

I imagine it's quite a bit different to riding a bike, since counter steering doesn't really work on this thing. The Yamaha Niken would be more in the realm of a motorcycle, I suppose. Would be nice to know how it compares to the Can-am. If we're lucky, you someday get the chance to try one of those too.

If you want a fully automatic Can Am get the Ryker, people need to learn how to manipulate that shifter on corners, and use the whole RPM scale. I can take curves at high speeds and rarely hit them brakes by downshifting into the curves then upshift out of them. Pull with the inside hand on them curves as you lean into them. Auffallen tun beide. 👍
