This takes me back. A few years ago me and my wife traveled via auto train. It was perfect for us, I a giant rail fan and her wanting to go to Florida for vacation and visit family down there. We live in Ohio it wasn't a bad drive to the Virginia station, and taking my radio scanner on the train allowed me to keep somewhat clued in on passing trains as we went down to Florida. The pleasure of having our own SUV once down in Florida made things nice considering we had multiple places to visit while there. I had a wonderful experience going and coming back on the auto train. And trust me all those workers having to put up with my sunburnt and mildly hung over wife on the return trip did a great job keeping us satisfied as we travelled back to Virginia. Maybe soon I can take the auto train again.

It was my first time and I was a little nervous about being in a train for so many hours. I brought my tablet and my cellphone to have better internet connection. We got a roomette in our way down and a large room in our way back. It was a pretty pleasant experience. The food was good also. I did have a little bit of a hard time sleeping but I guess it was normal given the train movement.

The AutoTrain rarely, if ever, runs late. It's a hallmark of this service. I've used AmTrak passenger service often in the northeast corridor as a commuter. I've also taken the AutoTrain several times, but my favorite AmTrak trip was a cross country trip. I came from Klamath Falls in southern Oregon to Jacksonville, FL. Through the Cascades and the Rockies, across the plains into Chicago then Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, ending up in Jacksonville. Two full days and parts of two more days. It was a great trip. The crew was exceptionally nice and didn't mind taking a few minutes to chat with me about trains and train service. They were mainly a very experienced crew and knew what was going on at all times. Food was quite good. It exceeded my expectations by a bunch !!! And, a lounge car is always a nice feature !!!

The narration and photography of this presentation is spot on!

Maybe California should experiment with having an auto train running from southern California to northern California and back. An auto train would be appropriate for California since most people in California drive cars.
@andrewincalifornia20665 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming that is an SF to LA route. I don’t think it would make as much sense as the auto train because the auto train runs an overnight route from the north end of Orlando to the south end of Washington. It’s a longer route. The LA to SF route is much shorter and it would probably be the northwestern end of LA probably the valley, or Oxnard and the south end of the bay which is an even shorter route. Probably 5-6 hours driving which is probably less than half the amount of time it would take a train to load up all of the cars and make the run to San Francisco. I think it would be nice if Amtrak ran a regular train with Surfliner train-sets from DTLA or even San Diego straight into SF on Caltrain’s tracks. Btw I’m not trying to be a jerk, your comment just made me want to have a discussion about this.
@nortonhatfield73125 жыл бұрын
@@andrewincalifornia2066 I am glad you like my response and besides California is considered to be a car state because almost everyone in California owns a car and public transportation in California for most part is not reliable as driving a car to some destinations in California.

@MrGoodnplenty19575 жыл бұрын

@wenchance5 жыл бұрын
An auto train style route could be big for CA, especially a LA-SF service. There are a couple issues that come to mind though. A service following the Coast Starlight route would probably be too slow. I can take over 10 hours to get between LA and San Jose by the Coast Starlight and I’d doubt drivers will give up that much time to travel the same distance. The likely best option would by through the Central Valley following the San Joaquin route. This could also set up other destination options as well with service to Oakland and Sacramento. The only major snag with this though is that such a route would likely require using the Tehachapi Pass, which is usually barred to passenger service. That would leave a considerable service gap between Bakersfield and the LA Basin. Moreover, if a faster service between the Bay Area and LA Basin also existed, we could also see service demand on the Coast Starlight drop significantly on that portion, which could be a negative. A Central Valley service might be a viable option but the demand might be questionable and it would likely cannibalize San Joaquin service as well. More studies would definitely have to be done to see if such a service is possible and if it would have an overall positive effect on Amtrak. Other routes that could be possible are LA to Las Vegas or maybe Bay Area to Reno. I could also see a Frontier route being possible running between Albuquerque - Denver - Cheyenne. Heck, just for kicks, maybe Amtrak can get into the rolling highway business and buy a fleet of Roll On - Roll Off cars and truckers can hitch onto long-distance trains. By that point we’d be on our way to have a real “Steel Interstate”.

I have had the pleasure of taking the Auto Train and could not find anything to complain about. The service in the dining car was outstanding just like the food and several glasses of wine. The wine glass never got anywhere near being empty at any time in the dining car. Just like the video, my deluxe bedroom was turned down waiting for me to hit the bed and be rocked to sleep. I rode the train sometime in'98 and again in '99. Don't live in the eastern corridor anymore so no auto train for me anymore.

Thank you, Mike. This video is terrific and accurately captures the adventure of taking the auto train. We live in the Baltimore area and frequently use Amtrak to travel along the Northeast corridor. On three occasions, we have taken the auto train from VA to FL and back. I would have to say all three round trips were very enjoyable. The onboard staff was friendly and helpful. The dining car food was surprisingly good. We usually opt for a deluxe bedroom because of the in-room bathroom. A handy night time feature for seniors! Most of our trips departed and arrived right on time. One return trip a few years ago was delayed by an entire day, though. A February blizzard dropped so much snow in the DC/VA area that auto train service was suspended for 24 hours. We made lemonade out of lemons and spent our extra day in FL touring Cape Canaveral, an easy drive from the Lorton Station! We hope to take another trip in the future.

I had an early departure coming and going on a recent trip. Was a half hour late arriving to Sanford. Worse was coming back. Didn't arrive in Lorton until about 2:45p due to the train crashing into a car in Savannah. Of course the train would probably be more reliable if CSX spent more on replacing their tracks. Along the ride, I saw the track conditions were fair to poor which explains why the train slows down at certain sections. Average speed was about 50 with a peak of 75. The beat up sections of track had the train slow down to about 30. Despite its lateness, we still had a pleasant ride. Sure beats the stress of driving down.

The British railways run on priority head codes that cost more money for higher priority from 1-7. The Express passenger services are usually the most expensive, but there are several levels for freight and passengers.
@uzziya63925 жыл бұрын
Legally they have to give way to Amtrak and other passenger services. It was part of Nixon's conditions that established Amtrak in the first place - freight railway companies would have their unprofitable passenger services (which they were legally required to run) transferred to a public company and in return those same companies would have to give way to passenger trains. They just seldom actually follow the law though because state governments pretty much universally let them get away with it for political (i.e. corruption) reasons. Amtrak is in a legal battle with several freight railway companies right now over exactly this.
@qjtvaddict5 жыл бұрын

@@bjxxx Freight railways rely on those subsidies. I'd be hesitant to do that on account of the fact that basically the entirety of the country relies so heavily on the freight railways for heavy industry. This looks like a great service. Love Amtrak. Sleeper cars are great. Food is good. And staff is top drawer! And it is an excellent way to see the USA.

Fantastic video man!!!! I've always wondered what it's like to ride on Amtrak's long-distance trains, especially on one that allows you to bring along your car as well!!! I also enjoyed the parts where you showed us inside the rooms of the sleeping cars, lounge car, dining car, and coaches now that was really awesome!!!! What I found the most unexpected in the video was a face reveal, which was very surprising to me considering the fact that you wanted to do one for the 500k subscriber milestone...but other than that, another great video!!! Well done man!!! I hope you do one like this on another long-distance train like the Southwest Chief.... :) +CoasterFan2105

TrainsForDayz2398 Southwest Chief was already taken by Bobby Harvey, he’s GREAT too... These men are my two favorite Amtrak narrators. PLEASE DON’T ASK ME TO CHOOSE WHO’S THE BEST!🤔😮

There are such trains in Europe as well, and they're more common than here in the U.S.

@@simplywonderful449 , multiple people have commented on here that they wished europe still had auto trains. they said it has been discontinued.

I love Amtrak, taking the Capitol Corridor from where I am to either Sacramento or to the Bay Area is better then driving on 80/680/280/101

We had trains like this in the UK upto the 1980s called motor rail.

You can still drive your vehicle on the train and go through the chunnel. Me and some friends did that a few years ago.

If you ever go to Kensington Olympia Station there's still a car park labelled as the motorail car park.

I mean I travelled on the German equivalent, the Autozug back in 2008 from Hamburg to Basel. However since then DB cut the service and a company called BahnTouristikExpress, who also operate some trains for Flixbus has taken over the service. I haven't gotten a chance to check it out though, going anywhere near Hamburg in a car, especially during the holiday season is just asking for trouble.

They were all completely overhauled in 2009-10. I think it has something to do with the way the train brakes are controlled on the P40 VS the P42, but I'd have to check on that.

In 2005, we took Via Rail, The Canadian from Toronto, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia and that is a trip to take, breathtaking scenery through Alberta and British Columbia. Several years later we took Via Rail, The Ocean from Montreal, Quebec to Halifax, Nova Scotia. That was a great trip as well. I've also taken the Polar Bear Express from Cochrane, Ontario, to Moosonee, Ontario which is just inland a bit from James Bay.
