I’m 65 yrs old and just new to riding over the past 8 months . Once a week lessons - and just had my second lesson riding bare back . I must say I’m hooked ! I’ve never felt so connected in a saddle and my balance for whatever reason is better w/o a saddle 🤔. I use a pad on the horse and wear padded bike underwear to alleviate pressure on my bones in turn I believe this alleviated added pressure on the horse . I had the best trot EVER !

Ugh! Me too. My boy gets fat on air. And now that it's spring there is the new spring grass coming up. Grass and grazing are his enemy. Last summer he was a hair away from foundering and we had to crash diet him and soak his hay, plus we put him in a "dry lot." We got him out of danger but I'm probably going to have to do all that again.

@@ellieelizabeth5627 you have to get him out of the grass now, before any visible signs of lameness. If your horse has a cresty neck he probably shouldn't have any fresh grass ever ( besides a few mouthfuls when you have him in hand)

@@grannyhorsetraining878 thank you. He doesn't have a cresty neck and he's under vet care. He wears a muzzle for half the day and his hay is limited. Believe me I have my eye on it everyday and I weigh him twice a week. I also take his pulses a lot, to the point where I'm obsessed. His pulses are normal.....so far. His grain has been reduced too and I watch his carbs.

I learned to ride by riding solely bareback at around age 8. I ride dressage now, but at age 59, still hop on bareback periodically for short, non-training rides on all of my horses. I tuned into this video because I was specifically curious about the pros and cons due to seat bone pressure. Great video.

My favorite bareback riding memory is one of watching my dad swing up onto his Arab mare, bareback of course, but not even any reins, halter or lead rope, and tear across our field at at what I recall as being incredibly fast. I think I was 3 or 4. Still was so cool to see.

I broke a pony in bareback. He was of unknown age, mounted but not fully broken in, traumatised and unpredictable. We could not fit a saddle on him as he was very round and basically had no withers. I rode him in walk and trot (he had the softest trot ever) for about twenty minutes at a time until he behaved well and trusted me to ride him. We later proceeded to canter short distances and hacking out for approximately an hour at a time. As he reached a healthier weight and developed more muscle, it was possible to fit him with a saddle. He eventually became a wonderful children’s pony and is ridden with a saddle.

Probably the first time I sat on a horse was my best bareback memory. I was 16 I think and he was a cranky old quarter horse that a friend of mum's was going to lease to us for free. Miraculously, he is now ours and I have bought an ottb who is the best horse in the world, but it all started with cranky old Inca. Apologies, Inca, you're not that cranky. Just characterful.

I rode bareback only once briefly when taking lessons, and liked it a lot. I was able to feel the horse's movement much better, and overall felt more in tune with the horse. But yeah we gotta do what's best and comfy for the horse

Hahaa, most of my bareback experiences were on racehorses. If they had a small girth sore or mark, they would go without a saddle. In saying this, the gallops were faster than usual especially when passed by other horses. I have to admit, it was both fun and hairy at times.

I just started bareback like 2 days ago haven't really rode bareback here and there but I haven't rode my horse for a bit so I got on my horse started bucking and you'll know when ur gonna stay on, you'll know ur balance cause when my horse buck my whole body was going to the middle of the back, and I didn't feel like I was gonna fall... same goes when ur horses rears up with ur u stay in the middle, same goes when ur horse runs in circles, you'll know where u comfort spot is, I'm more of a self taught person, you won't know u til u get on a horse bareback cause all you'll say is "fuck it" u just got t expect the unexpected at that point when ur riding ur horse bareback

What’s the deal with bareback pads? I’ve always been confused about what their intended purpose is. I’ve heard people say they help alleviate some of the pressure from the seatbones, so people who ride bareback often should use a pad, but I’ve also heard that it’s a myth. I’ve also heard that some bareback pad designs can put excessive pressure on the withers. Personally, I like to ride with a bareback pad just for the comfort and better grip, but I haven’t noticed any big differences in my riding with a pad as compared to without a pad. So, do bareback pads actually help with spreading out localized pressure?
@sidilicious11
@sidilicious11 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt they spread out the pressure. I do think they pad our seat bones. Supposedly it’s hard on the horse’s spine compared to a well fitting saddle.
@cervid_appreciator
@cervid_appreciator 3 жыл бұрын
@@sidilicious11 That’s exactly what I assumed, since there isn’t really any structure that could spread our pressure (like a tree), but I’ve heard so many contrasting things about it. It’s a really confusing topic haha

Yes they do. I use two one inch thick wool felt pads sewn together with a cinch sewn in. It is good for the horse's back because it better distributes the rider's weight. I am an adult and weigh 165 lbs. So, I only ride this way for brief periods. Western saddles distribute the rider's weight the best. And I do not ride horses that are still growing.

Watching this realizing why our horse doesn’t buck me off... he’s got a bad hip so I put a saddle on him and adjusted my balance to stay off that hip. Will buck bareback and now I know it’s from too much pressure. My husband said he’s never seen him with soft eyes like that and will only let me mess around his neck/face, and give him kisses 😂 he’s just a giant puppy who needs love and a good saddle.

Why do you think some horses prefer bareback? I have come across two different abuse cases where under tack regardless of training they are very stressed, nervy, right movement, etc. but bareback they are a DREAM. Confident, open float movement, body language indicating happiness, etc.

One time I rode in a dam with my horse for the first time ever she likes water💧💦But then a twig got stuck on her foot the guy helping me get in the water got stepped on his foot by her hoof she bursted out and I was so surprised (◉0◉)ᵎᵎᵎ I stayed on,(Still today I'm so proud that I stayed on because of my previous accident) now I'm okay with it(keep in mind my horse was the first 5 yo to go in that dam ever they do it each year at camp) , because once I tried to trot bareback and I fell of 3 times I was still terrified of it and till today I did not go faster than walk ever again butt next week I'll try and start bareback again wish me 🍀🍀🍀🍀🤞🤞🤞🤞
