I took a night bus to Niigata from Tokyo and I have to say it was not a pleasant experience. The seats were too uncomfortable and stiff to sleep in. But I enjoyed the rest stops along the way even thought it was in the middle of the night and there was not may people in them. The most memorable rest stop was the one in Saitama. Misato Kodama I think it was. It was misty and rainy even though it was in the middle of summer. What happens if you get left behind by the bus? Do the bus company allow you to get a ride on the next bus to your destination?

Thanks for your comment. The bus guide checks the number of passengers every time, but sometimes I hear stories about people being left at the parking area. I don't know what they do in that case😅.
