The Isle of Wight "Island Line" is one of the UK's most Unique and Quirkiest Railway Line, with it's unusual route over a pier and through a very low tunnel not to mention being run by trains that use to operate under the streets of the british capital.
In this video I take a round trip along the Island Line from Ryde Esplanade, down to Shanklin and then back up all the way to Ryde Pier Head. Onboard a British Rail class 484 EMU, a train that alot of people will know as the London Underground District line 'D Stock'.

My daughter and I had a day out on this line in the early 200s when she was at Portsmouth Uni and it was so lovely to see all those old London tube trains again.

The 484 windows provide ventilation, not air conditioning. The 'D' stock trains, when coming out of service from London, had bogeys only 10 years old. They also had aluminium bodies. It's for these reasons that so many of them were bought by the ill-fated Vivarail for modification and renovation into new trains.

It is also definitely worth mentioning that i think its also probably the only passenger rail line in the south that doesnt have welded tracks so you truely hear that nostalgic "clackety-clack" when the train is at speed which you dont have elsewhere in UK to my knowledge 😊

I might want to hop onboard the D78 Stock again there at the Island Line. The last time I'm onboard them was in 2014 and 2016 while they're still operating on the London Underground District Line

Is this why the London Underground is being forced to upgrade their trains? They discarded perfectly usable 37yo trains… when some train models can be made to last over 60 years, even 80 years in some French cases.

So interesting seeing Tube lines running outside of London. Why doesn’t it go around the whole island? I guess geology and population density?

The Isle of Wight once use to have a very extensive network of railways to all corners of it. However sadly overtime due to the famous "Beeching Cuts" they slowly started to disappear. The short 8 Mile Island Line section was saved because it was stated that it would cause severe hardship if it was closed.

4:40 Its predecessors were proper tube trains but the 484 is from sub-surface stock and much closer to a standard British Rail train than many believe. 12:49 Actually most train motors sound alike. In the 2000s new trains had a distinctively different motor sound (I guess the rotors became silent) but the trains from late 2010s (especially Aventras) had the "bass" motor sound back. If anything the 484s seem to share the sound with them. The start-up noise (VVVF?) was definitely not found on D-stocks.

@@Spacebug111 Sub surface trains in London are exactly that, sub surface. Tube trains and stations refers to the deep level lines. all go under the blanket title of London Underground. The distinct motor noise when starting or stopping is from the motor control system using Gate Turnoff Thyristers., common on a lot of electric multiple unit trains.

Interior wise, they are extremely similar to when they operated on the London underground, the only real difference is that it used to look more green and there were no charging ports or door buttons.

Please understand there are now NO TUBE TRAINS running on the Isle of Wight. They are built to British standard loading gauge, and would NOT fit in a tube tunnel. Lack of correct information on railways has led to terrible accidents.
