I have a Colnago with Campagnolo Record 10 speed from 2001. I had to go to the workshop once in these 20 years. The indexing in the right shifter lever gradually disappeared. A little spring was replaced. Going out on this 20 year old bike now for a 200 km ride! I must say that electronic shifting and disc brakes is a great improvement though, as long as it works. But my new bike with di2 the battery drains on 3 days, and the workshop have had it for 3 weeks. No big issue with a old spare bike with campy!

Rediscovering the simple joy of riding again - no demanding training schedule, no traveling, just cycling. I have also discovered that my old bicycles’ geometry doesn’t exactly suit my older body. Consequently I am shopping for a new bike and this Super Record EPS set is terrific. It’s overkill for me now, but it’s gorgeous. It won’t make me faster, but I don’t race anyway . . .

I have 4 bikes with Campagnolo: Two have 10 speed Record, the other two with 11 Speed Super Record. All mechanical with one being the 11 Speed HO, the first release of the Hydro brakes. Not a single issue with any of the four. Never tried EPS, Shimano or SRAM's electronic sets on the road, but have tested the shifting of all three at the LBS. I like the way Campagnolo EPS shift buttons feel. The button presses feel more defined or positive in my opinion and the derailleurs are quieter in operation when compared to Shimano and SRAM. All three manufactures make great sets though. I would really like to see FSA continue to develop their groupset.

I know this strand is a year old but I´ll try anway. I had a Parlee Z1 custom build in 2008 with a Campagnolo Titanium Record 10 speed which had just been released. I was running a compact with 11x25 cassette and can say that its performance over a 12 year period was utterly superlative. The feel and capability it gave arguably the world´s best and most expensive frames of the day was a perfect marriage. I raced the bike, did regular club meets, sportifs and training camps using a flight case, toured and trained 10´s of 000´s of miles with minimal maintenance in absolute confidence that gear changes would be instant, silky smooth and 100% reliable even under load and in attacking anger. A sheer joy. Having moved from London to Spain I eventually decided to 'upgrade' to the Super Record 12 mainly as I didn´t deem the workshops in Spain capable of rebuilding the slanting rear derailleur. The new Super Record is a thing of beauty to behold but just doesn´t come anywhere close to the 10. It misfires is crunchy, pingy, needs fettling and is definitely not to be relied upon for assured safe changes each and every time a safe sharp acceleration in a demanding manoeuvre is dialled. I have made my mind up after 3 years, easing off and accepting its limitations. I wanted to clarify whether the groupset you tested here did indeed comprise a titanium 12 cog cassette? If so 'haleluya' as the 11x32 I have is aluminium and steel with some ineffective fancy coating. It does not have the assured silky smooth feel of the titanium 10. I'd love to revert vintage some day as stupidly I sold the entire groupset on eBay. Your EPS (V3 or V4?) report was very encouraging as the original EPS version was variously reported as agricultural to too slow on demand. Also that the 12 was optimised for EPS explaining the possible inferiority of the mechanical version I have. I hope at some point to buy the EPS 12 V4 and fit it to a custom Moots titanium frame wanting to get back into the stratosphere as a committed Campag aficionado. Thanks for reading.. keep up the good work!

I greatly prefer the Campagnolo shifters, not only the separation between index finger and thumb, but also the ability to instantly switch several gears up. It is great when coming out of slow corners. I'm not sure how fast and intuitive the EPS can do this as I've never tried that. But I imagine holding down the button is not as fast and deliberately switching 2, 3, 4 or 5 gears in one go is harder as you only have timing to determine that while the mechanical feedback on my thumb was really precise (you feel how many clicks you went). I have started out cycling 20 years ago with a Campa Veloce 8 speed, then upgraded to a Campa Veloce 10 speed. Currently I'm riding a Chorus 11 speed but I'm looking to upgrade to a more modern bike since aero, wheel and tire technology has made so much progress in recent years. And since I'm older now and disposable money is more available than in my earlier years, the Super Record will be on my next bike. I'm just not sure if it's going to be mechanical or EPS. I have tried a Dura Ace Di2 on Mallorca last year and I don't really see the appeal of electronic shifting - it isn't faster, more precise or more reliable. It isn't bad, but do I want to have another battery to wory about?

@Chris Tate dunno, maybe that's due to how my 105 cables are routed in the frame, but I'm having to constantly adjust the tension to get precise shifting on a mechanical. For me electronic shifting is superior as it offers the same, reliable shift no matter how hard you press the lever...

Smooth and fast shifting is essential. If this was the only product that offered that type of performance, then I’d say it’s a must have. However, other group sets offer excellent performance as well. But if I was a super fan and I felt I must have the “barbecue “ setup, I’d get it somehow. Since I don’t race because I’m slower than most children on their bikes, it would be nothing but a conversion set up for me. It would be pure bling..

nobody talks about how e shifters sometimes in the middle of a ride decide that you are riding in a wrong gear, and it shifts from big ring to a small one on a flat terain whilst riding 40+km/h... so you have to pull aside and using your phone reset the whole thing etc etc and more similar ghosts from the software... beautiful yes! worth the ride quality upgrade? not convinced...
@davidarthur3 жыл бұрын
That doesn't tally with my experience of any electronic groupset at all and sounds like some sort of weird technical issue you're having. What groupset is it you're using?

I am glad if that sort of thing is a rare anomaly, but within 2 weeks my buddy riding campa 12 super record had this happen twice, once it needed the software update in the middle of a ride, and other friend had a similar thing with dura ace di2 but with rear derailer. Both of them are totally happy with their equipment and enjoy riding it. But we also saw that happen in some races. For sure mechanic stuff has issues here and there but it would be naive thinking e-groups are perfect and with no bugs... I am sure someone is working on resolving those as we type... cheers! I'm new to modern bikes. Been riding in 1978 which bikes then were so much different than today. Just wondering though, this Italian bicycle Bianchi is priced at mid range Ducati like Monster, with the latter has tons of components more and could go about ten times faster. Well, as an old man who rode on bikes with gears that stick out on the handle bar and sometimes needed to spin the pedals backward a couple of cycles before the gear changed into place, I think bikes these days are much overpriced.

is it because I never use any electronic groupset, but I prefer to have the shifting sounds on my bike (especially on those front derailleur) and in my opinion that sounds amazing🤣
@rastamangr83783 жыл бұрын
I appreciate this video, but you don't really say why EPS is superior, apart from quicker gear shifts and prestige and a feeling. I've ridden both EPS and the new Red AXS etap, and I agree EPS is better, and the main reason is the deraileur motors feel stronger and smoother, and that is the main thing I look for in a group. Finally, the question is not if it is worth it to spend the extra money to buy EPS, but if it is worth not spending the money -- a few, six or seven, hundred dollars -- when you will be riding the group for 6, 7, 8 or even more years. Is saving a few hundred dollars worth it when you are on this bike day after day and you want the best ride and it is what you really love to do?

Hi David! So just to clarify....when you say that for you this is better than Dura Ace and the Red? Is that coming from a personal experience based on performance? Or is it just because you like the way Super Record looks?
@davehause85713 жыл бұрын
I prefer Shimano shifting, especially the ability to shift to a lower gear while using the rear brake. Difficult to do with other systems. But I wouldn't complain if someone gifted me Campy Record group.

Hi dear David. Awesome review as always. You have the best content! I have some questions. What do you think about those Fulcrum Wind 40db wheels? Do you like them? Would you recommend them or other option at the same price range? After reviewing top of the line wheels as the new Campy Bora Ultra WTOs, what do you think of this Fulcrums? I’m a normal rider which rides both flats and lots of climbs, so want to upgrade to a carbon wheel set which is versatile, light, but also offers aero advantages. Been really interested in this fulcrum because of the features and price, but would love your review/comments/thoughts on those wheels. Thank you so much!

Thanks! I was impressed with the Fulcrum wheels. They look and ride very well and are well priced and while they're not in the same league as the Bora Ultra WTOs they're a decent setup

@@davidarthur awesome David. Thanks so much for the reply. Would you recommend them or other in this price range? You think 40mm is enough for aero advantages and versatile enough for lots of climbing? Thanks again and keep the great content. Best wishes!

For a bike noob - what makes this so expensive?
@OVOCNYCHECK3 жыл бұрын
I have never ridden campy but In the looks department it is lacking a lot considering it is "Italian" That crankset-spider-chainring combo, is not my cup of tea really, it looks very cheap. Both deraileurs are I guess fine

I have SRAM red and yes in my view the crankset looks better than the Campag

Good luck buying any groupset at the moment. The shelves are bare and the prices are sky high for what’s left.

Is the shifting speed and Quality measured or just jour feeling??? Even the loudness or smothness seems subjective as there is no comparison. As you do it it seems like advertisement
@mathewcampbell84793 жыл бұрын
Not sure about shifting speed, but comparing front mech EPS vs front mech Di2 noise levels, the EPS is significantly quieter.
@TheStrobelx3 жыл бұрын
@@mathewcampbell8479 I'm not sure if noise is actually a indicator for shifting quality. For example an old sram 11s shifter is very loud for shifting it really feels like banging in the the gear. Compared to that shimano is very smooth and quit. Some people prefer this other the other. And it actually doesn't say anything about "shifting quality" or best shifter on the market. For many people it is just the expense that makes a shifter feel like good quality. Not the actual shifting performance.
@stevemawer8483 жыл бұрын
@@TheStrobelx Noise requires energy to produce so a quiet shift is more efficient, therefore better (= high quality).
@TheStrobelx3 жыл бұрын
@@stevemawer848 so you do a noise test where you measure the noise…?
@TheStrobelx3 жыл бұрын
@@stevemawer848 The total Energie is time * power. So no noise maybe means also a slow shift.

to my mind SRAM has the most logical shifting setup, but I'm a lifelong Shimano user. I have never tried Campagnolo EPS but I don't like the look of the thumb shifters. Maybe they work OK.

12 speed SR casettes are not in titanium! Campagnolo where first with 9-speed as well. There is a 50/34 cranset and a 11.34 cassette as well.

I highly doubt the opinion of EPS would be the same if the price was half what it is. That groupset and that bike, the whole thing looks like a $600 bike IMO. Maybe it looks better in person but its hard to see anyone turning a head for that bike.

@@kidShibuya I have never owned a Bianchi but their mid to higher end bikes are not trash... The understatted paint and logo's are to mind simple class but that is in the eye of the beholder... IMO all levels of Campagnolo looks better, shifting & comfort on the shifter hoods ( edit here ) those new hoods do look a bit tall/ fat tops!
