DESCRIPTION: PART 2 OF OUR FUN RIDE WITH DAY BY DAY VLOGS - Everyone is feeling off their game and a little crazy after Christmas. Duke came to the barn with us but since he has been out of work, it is taking a little work for Kate and him to find their groove. Julia works on maintaining her balance on Storm while going over jumps. Everyone switches horses and Gabby jumps Duke! Find out what Laura says I am really bad at! PLUS, Why is Storm on our trailer? Is he coming home with us? NOTE: I apologise for the video quality - something happened when I uploaded it and I am not sure how to fix it.

ABOUT US:
We moved from the city to the country one year ago, right before the Covid lockdown. So much has happened in the last year and a half. We now have 6 horses (including a newborn foal and Johnny, AKA Duke, from Day by Day Vlogs), chickens, baby chicks, guinea fowl, handsome roosters, 2 adorable bunnies, a livestock guardian puppy and 2 house dogs that are adjusting to country living (one more successfully than the other). We have undertaken many renovations (both inside and outside), love sharing tips/ tricks/ hacks, trying to repurpose items or do things on a budget, and are always looking for the next DIY project. We started taking videos for family and friends to keep them updated on our journey as we navigate trading in city life for life on the farm... and decided others may be interested as well. So here we are on KZbin, and learning the in's and out's slowly but surely.
We hope to produce video content that is entertaining (who doesn't love seeing horses and cute animals), allows you to follow our horse journey and life on the farm, provides you with some inspiration and ideas of things you can try in your own life, and hopefully gives you some helpful information.
If you or someone you know is interested in Horses, Bunnies, Chicken & Guinea Fowl, Livestock Guardian Dogs, DIY Projects, Before and After Home/ Garden/ Barn Makeovers, Tips/ Tricks/ Hacks, Country Living or Life on the Farm, PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and hit the NOTIFICATION BELL so you never miss new videos being posted.

He hates our trailer, so he just walked right back into the barn (it was icy under the snow so there was no stopping him). He was tricked with grain the first time and decided he wasn’t falling for it again. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

2 suggestion, put a light so Duke can see inside trailer,. 2nd when u start leading him in don't stop keep walking. In other words make a circle walk right in trailer without hesitating. I had a gelding that I just couldn't load, I got in the trailer stomped on floor and in he came, crazy yes but different horses different methods.

We tried the light but he hated it… it freaked him out. We even tried moving it so it wasn’t shining at him. I know it doesn’t look like it, but we try to go on without stopping. The problem we have is that he swings his bum sideways at the last second, so we stop because we don’t want him getting hurt. Funny enough, Scott spent his whole life working on a dairy farm, and showing & trailering cattle, but Duke is a different story for getting him on. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️. We will definitely try circling straight on… and stomping the floor. Who knows, maybe it will work for us. Thanks for the tips! We really appreciate it! 💗

@@BarnBootsandCountryRoots it's because he knows that if he moves to the side you'll let him win and he doesn't have to get on the trailer. See how automatic that response got. He figured yall out

Oh, I know! He so smart and was definitely winning🥴🤦🏻‍♀️. It was pretty bad. It is for sure us that needs to work on what we’re doing. It was hard because it was so icy, we didn’t want him (or us) slipping and potentially getting hurt. But he figured that out pretty quick.😉

Great job guys. I loved the “previously” and the “ coming up”. It was smart. Y’all should work on trailering duke just to do it because if he ever has something happen to him and he needs to get in the trailer as soon as possible, it would be very helpful. Love your videos and one of my favorite notifications. Thanks for posting videos.

wow duke is so beautiful and kate rides him so nicely! shes such a quiet rider and he seems to really like that. i think maybe she should bring him back to trot when he picks up the wrong canter lead and ask in the next corner though so that he learns that what hes doing is incorrect. this isnt hate at all just advice. also with trailer try having a lunge line on either side of the trailer to stop him from going sideways. im not sure if that makes sense but if you search it up it will come up with videos on how to do it. i know loads of horses this has worked for! practice makes perfect so maybe try walking him onto the trailer every day (or as much as possible) and then give him treats or grain on the trailer and the walk him off so that it just becomes second nature for him to walk on and he sees the trailer as a nice place

Looks like every horse don’t want to leave this barn , it a nice barn . Can a horse tell if a good barn ? Or maybe good people. Love, love your edit.

It is a great barn with absolutely wonderful people! The horses there seem happy and well taken care of 🥰. For Duke though, it wasn’t so much that he didn’t want to leave, as much as he wanted to be ANYWHERE that WASN’T that trailer 🤣. He apparently used to load wonderfully onto trailers. Brandan said when he owned him, he just went in and didn’t make a fuss at all. It makes sense that he would be good at loading because he is an OTTB and used to being in trailers to go to races, and shows (after his racing career ended). The only thing we can think is that those were bigger, slant load trailers. Ours is small and straight load. I don’t think he likes our trailer. We have gotten some helpful tips from viewers and will keep working with him. I would like to load him onto a slant trailer and see if it makes a difference. It would be interesting to see.

@@BarnBootsandCountryRoots remove the partition. Had a Thoroughbred that was like Duke. By moving the partition it was roomier. I shipped him without. Only time used it if I shipped two horses. Even then I didn't use it just a rope between them. ( only if they were buddies).

If he refuses make him lounge and move his feet then ask him and every time he refuses make him work till he figures out if he gets in the trailer he gets to rest
@BarnBootsandCountryRoots

I never thought of that. Would we do that beside the trailer or bring him back into the arena to do that? It is extremely icy outside, so it is difficult to even walk and not possible to do near the trailer. I don’t know that he would make the connection if we were bringing him so far to do it though.

@@BarnBootsandCountryRoots probably safer to do in nicer weather! You lead him up till he won't go up anymore, let him stand until he decides to back out himself. When he starts to back up or turn away, push him in that direction away from the trailer and drive him in a circle or move his haunches. Then lead back up towards the trailer where he gets to relax again is the basic jist. Make the wrong thing hard and the right thing easy, but on a day when you have no where to be! Ryan Rose on KZbin has some fantastic videos on this sort of stuff. Learning some basic ground work before will really help too! It will also help Duke learn to be more relaxed away from home. Definitely look around at different techniques and see what works for you all! It's never one size fits all with any animal. You may want to encorperate some positive reinforcement as well. Lots of videos on KZbin!!

Duke has no respect for the lead and leader. There is no reason for it. These race horses have great respect when being lead. Some where along the way he has learnt that he can get away with it by pulling. Love to see that all the kids were having fun.

He is usually very good and respectful being led in all other circumstances, but you are right and have a good point… when it comes to putting him on the trailer, he has no respect then and definitely drags, pulls, pushes… whatever he wants to avoid the trailer.

You need to move those feet and then without pause continue onto the trailer. You give him 3 seconds do walk on that trailer and if he doesn't then it's back to moving those feet. Trailer should be his only place of rest
