A few tips from a seasoned bike filterer in the UK where it's legal. Don't underestimate a vehicles ability to suddenly pull into your path, the general rule is that your speed should be no more than 10% above theirs (if they're doing 30, you shouldn't exceed 33). Don't rely on their indicators (signals), their front wheels are a better gauge at getting an idea of where they're going. I know when you're riding with friends that it's easy to lose concentration, but take it from someone who was almost killed doing it last year, the most minor of hits can cause really serious injuries. Stay focused and don't try pushing for gaps that are too small.
