17 years ago, Red Mountain Pass was my very first mission in my 18wheeler driving career. Took 13 liquid totes filled to the brim with drilling fluid strapped to a 48' Great Dane 10' spread, pulled with a beautiful 03 Pete long hood cat w13 speeds, coming from Farmington NM to Rifle. I felt so alive and thrilled and I'll never forget how serious I felt, also. You've reminded me of a great time watching this. Be safe. peace ✌️🕊️

Mike, thanks for taking us all along for your truck drives. It is wonderful to watch and hear comments of a professional driver that know how to drive in snow packed and ice. It seems you are driving very fast on the packed snow and maybe snow on ice on the roads in winter. I do remember even packed snow on ice has traction. You as the driver knows how to drive in conditions. You slow in corners with a bad slope or on ice nearing 32 freezing temps. I would rather drive on ice at 0 degrees F or below than ice nearing 32 degrees. I can see where the plow drivers have to be very careful to not damage the roadways with their plows. I have been looking at plowing up at Mammoth Lakes. They can't plow any more everything has to be put into bucket front loaders and trucked out because they have had nearly 20 feet of snow in 3 weeks. Every roadway has walls over 5 feet tall, plowing does not help. Everything has to be trucked to a city duping lot where the city charges $80 per load just to dump snow in a huge open parking lot in the winter.

Hey Mike! Another great video, so many thanks for posting. You have great driving skills, I drove artics (you call them 18 wheelers) for over 20 years in the UK, and never experienced anything like the snow you drive through, and you do it so calmly 😳. Great scenery, and a roundabout!! I don't know what you call them, but I don't see many of them in the US so I was quite surprised 😂. Looking forward to the next one, best wishes from the Isle of Wight 🇬🇧

I remember driving in winter snow storms in somewhat the same conditions. It is another world driving and traveling in those conditions. I remember growing up in northeast wisconsin in winter storms. It is wonderful to be able to drive in those conditions if you know how to drive safely. Living in southern california we never see anything like this in our mountains. In our mountains we see 4 wheel drive vehicles and Subarus in ditches because they all believe they can drive 65 mph or higher on snow and ice. They believe 4 wheel drive makes it so you can drive like on clean dry pavement. I was living in San Bernardino, California in the mid 1970s and drove my volkswagen 1965 rear wheel drive square back into the San Bernardino mountains after heavy snow. There were 4 wheel drives in ditches everywhere on the mountain roads above the snow line. I just drove more slowly and carefully on the snow covered and icy roads. I did bring chains for heavy snows and ice.

When I saw Durango to Montrose I immediately thought Million Dollar Highway. Drove that road every week from the Four Corners area up to Junction and beyond for well over a year. Of course, that was in a four wheeler, but even then it could be downright sporty at times. Lizard Head no prize but it’s a better road albeit prone to whiteouts. Be safe out there.
