Scott is my favorite curmudgeonly director. He trusts his vision, his crew, and his cast. He knows what he's about and doesn't give a fuck about the noise. He's one of our greats and I hate to go dark here, but when he's gone, you'll see people suddenly change their tune about his filmography, just like his brother. I was preaching the gospel of Tony Scott since I was a teenager. And it was only after his tragic passing that his work started to be re-assessed as the trend setting and vital work that it was. I felt good that people came around, but bitter it took his death to get there. But those of us who recognize genius when it's still around will just wonder where all that energy was when Ridley was on the mortal coil.

Agreed. Honestly, he's my favorite old-man director. His interviews are honestly hilarious

Jesus, this is an intelligent analysis for KZbin (for anywhere, really). I totally agree with you. Same goes for the death of various (classical) orchestral & choral conductors; & moreover, composers. Many thanks.

braveheart did some scenes with skipping frames. def inspired ridley. And even Peter Jackson, who pitched lotr as middle earth in the style of braveheart. i doubt gladiator would exist without braveheart
@FrameVoyager2 күн бұрын
For sure! Yeah it seems like this trend that was around from like 1995 - 2005. I mention the LOTR aspect of it in our Gladiator 2 production video coming out today. I will say, it's a choice at times for gladiator haha

Ridley Scott has lost quite a few loved ones in recent years, two brothers I think, and it seems to have affected how he's approached Films in his later years. Look at Covenant, The Last Duel and now Gladiator 2.

I think it would be a little less western-centric to recognise the skip frame technique appeared in Hong Kong films even before WKW used them
@FrameVoyager2 күн бұрын
I mean it's not like it was a brand new technique for sure. There was something about this specific time period in American cinema where it was used A LOT right around the early 2000s. But that's a fair point for you to make!
@LeeHarris2 күн бұрын
@@FrameVoyager FOh for sure, but step-printing and undercranking techniques were pretty common in HK in the 90s
