Wow, I almost fell out of my chair! Thank you both for this video about Riesi. I have never seen anyone do this before! My nonni Butera were born, raised and married in Riesi. I have stories of my nonno Guiseppe who worked as a young child in the very Sulfer mine you covered. They also emigrated to Boston, My Grandfather first in 1915 and a few years later my nonna Teresa. Through my grandfather/father, utilizing JS, I was recognized as a "cittadino italiano" In 2011. This was a journey of discovery learning so much about my grandparents, Sicily and my Sicilian commune, Reisi. I can't wait to share this with family. Grazie mille per questa importante storia di Riesi.

So fascinated by Riesi. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. As many times as I have been to Sicily (a lot), I never heard of it. I would go just for the muffaletta. I love that program by the Italian Government, Resto Sud!

Ciao. There are news reports that Agrigento is running out of water and is discouraging tourists from visiting. What do you know about this and are other parts of Sicily experiencing similar drought related problems? Best regards. L.

Hi Eszter & Alfred……as I mentioned in a previous video, my wife and I will be visiting Sicily in September 2024 for two weeks. We will be staying in Balestrate at a B & B. We plan to do some sightseeing and beach hopping. We are in our mid 60’s, not exactly spring chickens, but relatively healthy and mobile. We really want to visit the beaches at San Vito Lo Capo for the day. What do you recommend in terms of modes of transportation to get there from Balestrate ? Any idea of the costs involved ? BTW, great videos ! My mother is Sicilian , she is always watching your videos, started from your first one and continually watching religiously. She oftentimes has tears in her eyes seeing the home island and the various scenes that you two produce. We can’t thank you both enough. Keep up the good work 👍 Darren

What a beautiful note! GRAZIE ! God Bless your mom! There may be a bus to San Vito or ask your B&B for help . They are local and should be able to help.

In Sicily the sulfur is an important piece of our history under several corners. First off sulfur remind us many stories linked at sorrow and hard work. Many people have not other chance of working in mines and someone lost the life. In other perspective sulfur was even a real important sicilian economy pillar until the mines were gave up, and right from then many people moved toward USA or other places. And, you know, even on sicilian dialect sulfur has got an important place. If some sicilan said "Suffuru!" (sulfur). He means to decline something requirement no way! That idiom has a history behind. According a legend once a gentleman was carrying sulfur over him cab when a man asked a lift for him. The driver replied he would got a lift for fee as he was a sulfur piece. Then the gentleman paid the fee according him weight and was allowed to come on the cab. After some time the road became uphill and the donkey wich pulled the cab got unable to carry on. The driver asked to the passenger to get off and help him to push the cab but..... the passenger retorted "Pi Suffuru pavai e Suffuru sugnu" (I paid as was sulfur then now I'm just as sulfur laid over here.... arrange it in your own) 😁😁

Hello, Do you by chance know what happens to those unfortunates whose flights to Catania are canceled? Are they able to get re-routed to Palermo (at worst)? I'd prefer to see the eastern side of the island with my wife (she's never been, I was stationed in Sigonella more than a few years ago). Just out of curiosity.
@YouMeandSicily5 ай бұрын
@@michaelwilkinson2110 first thank you for your service. Second some are re-routed to Palermo or Trapani. Depends what airline.
