thank you so much for explaining this in simple terms. no extra talk. short and sweet.

Hi Dave, I'm learning guitar and wondered can you please explain the difference between a Riff and a lick
@WhatMakesBritainGreat6 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry - A riff is the repeating series of notes that is that recognizable part of the song like the famous Riff of 'Whole lotta love' . A riff is that cool sounding bunch of notes that you remember. Clear examples would be - 'Walk this way ' Aerosmith, 'Black dog' ' The ocean' Led Zep, ' Black knight ' Deep purple. Lick has started to be mixed up with Riff lately, but a lick is firstly, a set pattern of notes that a guitar player throws into his solo, licks are like 'little cool bits he's put together that he uses, that he can throw into his solo. 'Repeating groups of notes used in a solo' would be a usable definition. A great example of licks would be Jimmy page's solo on 'Whole lotta love' after the 'out there' bit. When he comes in and plays the solo- Each section is a lick. Hope that makes sense.

Heavy riff meaning??
@WhatMakesBritainGreat4 жыл бұрын
Hey lalthanthuami, Well a heavy riff -the definition changes over time with people's tastes and trends: In the early 70's The riff to 'whole lotta love' was considered a heavy riff. Black sabbath's tracks like 'War pigs' are still heavy riffs, later Metallica's classics like 'Sandman', Rage against the machine riffs, and then later the heavier metal style of bands,(thrash/industrial/nordic. The heaviness is really defined by the notes used that make a 'darker' sound. combine that with tuning the guitar strings lower and it gets even heavier. So really -Darker notes and lower tuning make for a heavy riff these days. BUT any good riff that hits you in the stomach when u hear it is a heavy riff!
@williamvega86523 жыл бұрын
Are Riff and Hook the same?
@WhatMakesBritainGreat3 жыл бұрын
No, but they can be both : A hook is that part of the song that grabs your attention and pulls you in . A hook is an attention grabber, there can be many hooks in a song , in fact producers tend to go over the top these days filling songs with anything that sounds catchy. A hook might be a vocal part, Adele’s Rollin in the deep The first vocal line is a great hook, really catchy melody, a guitar bit, like whole lotta love, the riff itself is a hook , soon as it comes in it’s like oooh that’s cool , so in that case the riff is the hook. A catchy sound is often used as a hook, like the weird Arabic violin sounds in Brittney spears ‘Toxic’ they’re all little hooks.
