IMHO the 50/200 yard zero is more consistent on hold overs/unders. From @ 50 to 200 your zeroed, at 15 yards your low @ 1.5", at 100 yards your high @ 1.5" and from 7-10 yards your 2.5" low, So basically 7-10 yards you hold high 2.5" everything else out to 200 yards you hold centered without a hold over/under except for heads shots. Thanks for the AWESOME videos, keep them coming! I wish I could take one of your classes I'm sure I'd learn a bunch.
@jovannibaeza1915 жыл бұрын
@@FreedomInc 36 still had hold overs that you need to practice. This video is about the effect on close range engagements. Anything below the zero requires hold over, and thats all he is showing here. I use a 50 yd zero on my HD gun (10.3" canned sbr). The reticle is designed for 50yd zero, with the bottom of the big ring being a the exact hold over for 7yd. 50 also provides a lower poi change out to from 50 to a little over 200, which I think any further is exceeding ideal effective range for unmganified optics, and a different solution should be considered For my razor HD genii on my 16" p415, I do use 36, being a very balanced zero as opposed to the 50 for my purpose built gun. Also important! Grain, barrel length, and optic height will affect your zero, so while charts are good reference, nothing beats actual data with your set up.

Great video. I'm still on board with Shawn Ryan's opinion that for CQB and HD the 36yd zero is the strongest. 25 yard - 300 yard hits within the size of a DVD.

This is and extremely valuable valuable video. Perhaps among the most important in your collection. One of the reasons I say this is because you take us to where we are at, what's your objective, or in military parlance, "what's your mission". As a civilian, I must be cognizant of the fact that the likelihood of having to justify killing someone at 100 yards, even half that distance is zero. In my case, I live in an urban environment where the distance to my neighbors' property is much less than 100 yds. In my case, the 25 yd zero is the way to go. You wisely point that out in the video. You've proven that the 100 yd zero is not a MUST. You've shown that what distance you zero at depends of the distances and application you can expect to encounter. In other words, we must snap out of our fantasies and be pragmatic and REAL. Thank you for this outstanding video, it was long overdue!

CountryBoyPrepper Because with 100 yard zero there’s basically no thinking involved from 0 to 200 yards. All corrections will be hold overs (no hold unders). Your round will hit within 0 to 2.5 inches low from 0 to 200 yards. So basically when the time comes, hold dead on outside of the house and hold a couple of inches high inside.

@@Abf_-oq8ps but,that zero is dependent on alot of variables. You may actually have to zero at 34.5 or 37.5 depending on barrel length,bullet weight etc. That's why you have to confirm that zero out to distance.
@Abf_-oq8ps4 жыл бұрын
Freedom Inc. any zero is dependent upon different variables, but in my situation, a 5.56 out of a 16 inch with a 36 yard zero is optimal. Using standard ball 55grain but yes if I were to use a defense round I would check and adjust accordingly. Barrel length matters of course, Personally I wouldn’t use 5.56 below 13, just wasn’t designed for smaller barrels. The point is you have a tighter spread with 25-300 (10 and in is usually going to be held top of the head) and holds aren’t such an issue as with other zeroes where they will start leave larger gaps and more hold awareness is involved. Of course all of this is without human error but it’s efficient IMO for most applications. I just think this is best for crucial situations where shots need to be taken quick.

With the hostage target you didn’t mention where you aimed at your 50 yard zero rifle. That’s the zero I use so I was looking for that information. You did with the other two rifles. Other than that small thing, however, I found this to be an exceptional video and well presented like all of your other videos. Thank you for sharing. I zeroed my rifle 1.9” low hit at 10 yard point of aim so that’s effectively a 50/200 yard zero. At “inside the house” distances I just have to remember to shoot a tad bit high, like 1.9”, to score a hit where I want it to go. There are lots of variables here with the round used, barrel length… etc the shooter should definitely do the drill you presented here and with the exact round used for home defense to provide reasonable certainty of a successful shot. Thanks for this valuable information… very helpful as always.

we're talking close range home defense, for me personally, I'm always concerned with bullet rising beyond the intended target and hitting an innocent 100 - 300 yd beyond the target, so I go with 100 yd zero because it's point of aim and lower, I feel that if you don't know your hold-over maybe you need more training, at close range aim for the forehead and that should keep your point of impact on the intended target

I took my rangefinder out to my front yard and looked up and down the block. One hundred meters is a long way down the block. The only scenario I can envision where I would have to shoot 100 meters is a total riot type event. Most times across the yard or at most 3-4 houses away is probably more realistic. Based on this video, it seems like the 25 meter zero makes the most sense for practical self defense application for a civilian. Understanding of course that law enforcement, or military have much different applications, my home defense rifle will most likely never be used for longer distance 'self defense' shots. That being said, I'm assuming in the long run it would be better to run a consistent zero on all rifles instead of trying to learn a few different zeros. So better to learn hold overs on a longer zero for close up, or hold overs on a shorter zero for longer distance? ?
@racex4288 жыл бұрын
agreed ....slightly adjusting the scope it hits at 75 yrds and close up spot on....if i have to shoot zombies farther out than that i can hold over slightly....it took a min. to get it right....but the damn laser at 25 meters is spot on even up close?
@borjeny14 жыл бұрын
I agree using same zero across all the rifles. I still like to zero my 16” That I use for 3-gun match because I got used to the holdovers already. Besides, why didn’t he use a rest to keep the variables less when he was shooting at longer distances?
@MTMILITIAMAN7.626 жыл бұрын
The 25/300 or 36/300 is best. It has the least deviation at close range where realistic defensive encounters occur, and less drop at longer ranges where you actually need a rifle. I run the 36/300 on my Colt 6960 with SIG Romeo7/Juliet 4. This works very well from bad breath distance all the way out to a quarter mile or more. The magnifier doesn't have a range finger or BDC, so having the rifle BZO at 300 is nice because it means I don't even have to start compensating for drop until arguably the max effective range of the cartridge, and can still put rounds on target without a lot of fuss about as far out as I can identify targets with those optics. I run around in the woods a lot shooting squirrels with my AR and it really helps you learn your sight offset at closer distances, and is a good confidence builder. If you can turn, present, and put a round on a squirrel peaking out from behind a tree fifty feet away, hitting something bigger, like a human head or heart, at half the distance seems pretty easy.

That is essentially, using hunting terminology, the MPBR or maximum point blank range. Maximum range to aim and fire without thinking too much on deer sized targets, with an effective thoracic zone of about 4 or 5 inches, I could be off a bit in my calc's, it's been a while since I looked at all this, but the principal is the same essentially as what you are already doing. I say keep at it and get to know how your rifle with your zero handles and you will be better off than someone who jumps around all over and never gets accustomed.

So, for a HD rifle where you are not likely to ever engage a threat past 25yd, would you zero at 25 to get a closer POA/POI?

For me I’d prefer the 100 yard zero because there’s less thinking involved (all corrections would be hold overs) and the spread would be no more than 2.5” from 0 to 200 yards.

Personally I use a very short range zero on my HD rifle. In a life and death situation you might forget offsets. So I want the round to go exactly where I’m aiming.

@@thejoatmoo What situation am I shooting my home defense rifle at 50 yards, much less 600. How is understanding practical use negligent? "Oh well maybe you'll need it for SHTF." Thats why I have another rifle setup for that situation. FML

@@thejoatmoo I understand where you are coming from, but I think you are really overthinking it. I know the distances in my home where I would be using the rifle. There's no place in my home where I would be firing at 10 yards. I also recognize that again even with multiple attackers the distance again in my home isnt likely to change enough to have a significant impact. In the very unlikely situation that someone has to use a weapon in the home other than me the most likely situation is them using their own pistol versus running through the house into my room and finding a rilfe they dont know where it is stored. On the off chance I bring them the rifle, why wouldnt I use it myself and let them use the weapon they are most familiar with? I've also trained with my rifle at different distances. That said, im not against doing a little extra to make sure my bases are covered.

Awesome video, I was able to do something like this a few weeks ago. Also trying different grain weights and seeing how that affected my zeros. Again awesome video thank you very much! Keep up the great work

I run a 100yd zero on my home defense gun, using an unmaginfied optic. My competition gun runs a 1-4x variable, zeroed at 25/300. I found that to be the best compromise for turning down to 1x for close in and cranking up to 4x to reach out to 500+. Any other suggestions for zeroing a variable optic?
