I have to zero at 40 yards to hit 1" high at 100, and 1.5" low at 200. Ballistic charts will show your bullet shooting flatter, than they actually do. I've learned that, from SHOOTING. Velocity is always advertised higher on the box, than they actually shoot out of your rifle. So, be careful going by the advertised velocity on the box. Get out and SHOOT. Trust me... So many variables come into play... Barrel length, temperature, altitude, barometric pressure, etc. The main variable is your optic height, over your bore. This angle becomes VERY important, at longer ranges. An AR platform may be very close to a 50-200 yard zero, but a hunting rifle will be very different, because of the angle created by your sight, and your bore. Bottom line... You have to get out and SHOOT.

Excellent. This is the same ballistic pattern that I see in the range with my 50 yard zero'ed carbine. I also liked that you guys brought up the point that you need to aim higher the closer you are from the target in order to compensate for height over bore of the rifle's barrel and sights.

His football analogy was perfect, the further you have to thrown something, the higher the arc needs to be in order to hit the target at that distance. I especially liked the way he talked about why it's much better to keep the flight height tight and close, I picked up on a few tings from this shooter/instructor. Enough so, I'm stopping my 25yd zeroing, and moving to the 50...thanks for a super good vid.

I sight all of my rifles in, splitting the difference between 100-200 yards. That's usually a little over 1" high at 100, then a little over 1" low at 200. It may be more like 1.5" high at 100, then 1.5" low at 200. It's according to the rifle, the cartridge, and the height of my optic, over my bore. A slower cartridge may even be a 2" margin at each distance. I shoot a group at 100, then I shoot a group at 200, until I have split the difference. All of my hunting shots are within 200 yards, so this works out perfectly for me. Keep in mind... The AR platform is gonna create a steeper angle, between your optic and your bore, unlike a hunting rifle, where the optic is mounted as close as possible to the bore. This creates less of an angle in flight, making the bullet travel closer to your line of sight.
@FedFire84048 жыл бұрын
50 yrds. = 200 yrds 35-37 yrds. = 300 yrds however each round is different and the margin of error maybe 1-2 in. Center mass shot at 200 yrds gives you a 18-20 in. center mass shot while a 300yrd shot gives you 12-14 in center mass. all figured with a 55gr. full metal jacket. Great vid...... shots measured from 25yd 50yd 75yd 100yd 200yd 300yd.

Awesome video. For someone newish to zeroing in an ar, should I just go with a 50 yard and practice different distances below and above 50 yards and call it a day? I dont plan on any close quarter ar15 action, but more of property defense. What is the best way to get good at judging distances of targets? One last question for you and its pretty dumb really, does shooting up or downhill effect your zero? Also- my rifle has offset iron sites, how would you recommend I set it up? scope @ 50 yard zero, irons at 25 yards?
@CaptainBerz9 жыл бұрын
Eight Leg Outdoors Set them up at the same distance so you have continuity with the zero's. Only way to get good at distance is to go to the range and go to different distances and get your eyes used to it. Or get a range finder and go out and get use to different distances. For home defense your still going to be withing that 2"-3" window with a center mass shot with a 50 yard zero from 0-200 yards.

good vid man. I always use a 50 yard or 36 yard zero for the same reasons you mention.. but usually 50 yards because the range I use is typically 225 yards or less for the targets

Key like you mentioned quickly it depends though. What is the length of barrel being used. What is the weight of the bullet? What is the twist rate of the barrel. All of this will change where the impacts are at different ranges.

I have a range at my home and have tested zeroing for years. Something to keep in mind is that you are not limited to 25 - 50 - 100 yard zeros. I use a tape to measure the distance and a rest so I know I'm right on and use a 60 yard zero. I think it's the best for an all around zero for the 5.56 and gives me a bit more reach if needed.

Oh and inside your zeror range you are going to be low due to mechanical offset by about 2-2.5". Zen masters of irons sights hold half or the base of the front sight post at closer ranges. If I had to guess, base of the FS at 10 and under and middle of the post at 15-25.

Finally figured out why the bullet is still rising farther out than your zero. You are shooting from a prone position, so to hit center mass the barrel has to be elevated to hit your target to start with. I can't shoot from the prone, overly curved back. So when I zero my rifle the barrel is closer to level than when in the prone, so I have a flatter trajectory, which means the bullet starts dropping sooner. So theoretically, I might have to zero at 200 yards to get the same results as in the video, which I really enjoyed.
@CaptainBerz7 жыл бұрын
No worries, you do not need to shoot prone to get the results.

The 25/300 is best since with it you get a bullet drop compensation function from the detachable carry handle sight. Zero center mass on body of E type target not including head.to assure mid range hits from 150 to 225 yards. The bullet path will be no more than 10 inches high or low to 350 meters and allows for hits on the E all the way out to 400 meters. Creds: CMP-USAMU certified MTI coaching SDM/SAFS.

I see no point in taking a rifle to a range, even if it is outdoor. It's not necessary where I live. I can hit 500 yards with 5.56, 1:7 and 62 grain with irons. Three Zero Eight touching 900 yards scoped is not extreme. It's not a question really needing answered. Just looking for opinions.
