I worked the rigs in the late 70's and again in early 2000. Quite a difference from back then to 2003 on new rigs. They don't use a spinning chain any more. Top drives, iron roughnecks and excavators do a lot of work we use to do by hand! I spun chain till my arm felt like it was going to fall off...lol It was the most dangerous thing to do on any rig so Im glad top drives replaced them. Oh and these guys both pulled out too much chain. And NEVER let that tail go or someone's gonna get a serious whip in the face or a hand gets snagged and fingers get ripped off! Been there felt the braided rope used for a tail on the chain slap me in the face and had the red welt across my cheek for the next week! lol

In America I bet, Canada actually has safety standards. But I won’t start the America vs. Canada beef. All I know is that all the drillers and roughnecks I’ve met up here have all of their hands and feet and most of their fingers. We also do stuff A LOT differently, more heavy machinery instead of physical labour, higher inspection standards etc.

Like we don’t even have chain hands we have doubles and sometimes triples then they run all their tubing and joints up with a cinch and shove it down the hole basically, and the cinch does all the fastening and tightening (With minimal assistance from the roughnecks.) pretty cool system actually if you’ve ever seen it in action.

It's ok. Everyone just starts out at some point. I was a master roofer for 21 years. Got into healthcare last year and I'm learning again 🤷🏽‍♂️

Never done this before and I certainly wouldn’t let go of the chain like he did at the end.

Chains are scary as hell. I worked a SAG D Tripple with dual manual tongs. Leave the floor lock alone, throw on your back up, throw on your top, winch line pulls her tight, no risking fingers on the new guys no more

No idea what’s the right way but in my head if the chain is just slipping what’s the point in letting it slip that much around the pipe. Isn’t it tight already? Genuine question. I have respect for the guys that do work like that it takes a different type of man to do work like that for an extended period of time.

Geeked thought and have no clue how this shit works but prove me wrong So I’m guessing it’s the angle/ extra surface area causing more friction to keep it from sliding, and you release a bit of chain wrapped around the pipe to let it slide? If so why are there not machines guiding the chains? Loop of chain, two motors, inbetween is the pipe with the chain wrapped, machines move angle to tighten and spin, then angle back to loosen enough to slide over the pipe diameter, slide pipe up or down?
