But how do I rig a character that has both skin and clotches ,belts,shoes,etc.? The skin overlaps on top of the clotches when animating .I could retopologize for there to be only clotches but it's not the solutions I'm looking for

Not OP, but I would make a new version and delete or mask the areas of the characters body covered in clothing that you'll never see. There's no reason to have it there when you're rigging

It should still work, as long as the .L or .R extension is added.
