In this video, I'll show you my complete process for rigging the Ninja Turtles using Rubberhose 3 from Battle Axe. We'll start by transferring the Illustrator artwork to After Effects easily using Overlord. Next, we'll rig the character using Rubberhose 3, replacing the arms and legs artwork with hoses, and parenting other artwork layers to the hoses. Then I'll show you how to make custom controls for more advanced rigging features like the color of the character, prop selectors, mouth shapes, and even facial controls. With everything in place, I'll show you how to use the Rig to EGP feature of Rubberhose 3 to create a source comp that can be reused over and over as a precomp with access to all of the custom rig controls we've created. It's an incredible workflow and unlocks so many possibilities for what can be done with characters in After Effects.

The essential graphics panel has come such a long way in just a handful of years! FYI-- Layer > Layer Styles > Stroke also works to add a stroke to a shape layer, and it will stay uniform even if the original stroke is tapered.

Rubberhose was already a great tool, but the EGP options make it next level for productivity.

In the first 90 secs Jake answers a mystery I have had since getting it but never took time to find out: why sometimes Illustrator art comes apart and sometimes stays together when teleporting with Overlord.

great tutorial! I'm not sure why Adobe team haven't added visibility to the Essential Graphics panel, it would make SO MUCH faster to setup instead of writing expressions

How would you bend character in front? suppose a golf hitting pose.. golfer is standing and then bending to hit the ball, how will you rig that from front angle? Because every character rig i see always bends to the either side but never in front.

On the "Pushing it further" section, i understand how to link the component to the point control, but how did you set the values to 0? mine inherit the value of the default position

I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly. But, You wanna add "+value" in your expression and that should fix it.

I've just bought Rubberhose. Great exercice to begin. But I've an issue when I do EGP to rig : controllers for Head and Torso move with them but rotation doesn't work 🤔. Any idea ?

For context - in essential properties my position values are red but my rotation values are blue

Im having an issue, ive re-ran it a few times and the same result. at 18:53 Ive delted contents and add the rectangle and stroke, but when i adjust the rotation position etc it doesn't affect the torso or head the shape just rotates around its anchor point. Not sure if ive set it up wrong earlier on? Any idea? Cheers

I figured it out for some reason i had to manually link them all to the rotation transform from the pre-comps essential properties. Not sure why as it looked to me that they transferred over when you did it
