Ed Roland and guitar tech John Oliva met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before a Collective Soul gig at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works. Roland has retired his electric rig in favor of filling the acoustic space in the band, while his brother Dean and guitarist Jesse Triplett do the heavy electric lifting.
Ed Roland rolls with just two acoustics on tour. He spends most of his time playing this Breedlove Legacy 12-string, which has a spruce top figured and maple back and sides.
Dean Roland is a minimalist, gigging with one guitar and one amp. The guitar is an abused and loved 1993 Gibson Centennial Anniversary Les Paul Standard in Wine Red upgraded with a TonePros bridge and saddle. The LP is strung with Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky strings (011-.052).

That turned out to be a great rundown! I was a little worried when the tech blew threw both guitarists gear in like... 4 minutes. But it was nice to just sit and chat with the singer about songwriting and history.

Ed is just SO sweet, SO cute and SO talented. I wish I could just pull him into the biggest hug ever and tell him I love him, and what he's done to make my life so much happier. Collective Soul is my favorite band ever.

I was a huge fan as a teenager. It really influenced me on how I approached learning guitar. I can't say I'm a fan of some of the more radio-friendly tunes. And now that I can understand the words, I can't really relate to the almost gospel lyrics. But Ed is a genius. Each song is a lesson on how to arrange and mix guitars. Listen to the 'rabbit' album on headphones and you'll see what I mean.

I can understand Ed not mentioning anything about Ross, but Joel Kosche spent 13 years as a member of that band, aside from being their guitar tech for years before that. Not to even acknowledge him is a real slap in the face, as well as insinuating Jesse is the only lead guitarist they've had that inspired Ed to leave all the lead work to him. Ross dug his own grave but I've still never heard the reason Joel was fired unceremoniously, without warning, a few weeks before Christmas. And got the band's manager to deliver the phone call.

90s were the best era for Gibson IMO! I'm a lucky owner of '91 Gibson Les Paul Classic & '97 Gibson Les Paul Standard all in stock... They are built like a tank and play fantastic. I use the classic mainly for 80s hard rock/metal and the standard for grunge

Hey Premier Guitar... we need a new Collective Soul rig rundown. Just saw them live and their setup was different. Jesse's using a switching system and Dean's pedalboard had changed. Just sayin!
@jonmccauley6490
@jonmccauley6490 7 ай бұрын
They change guitars all the time as well. I believe they did start with personal Gibsons and possibly Fenders, but then went to and probably promoted by PRS by the mid-late 90's. Then the Breedlove he talks about here was actually another promotion they did. Now they're back to having a mix of guitars again. Both Dean and Jesse had Gibson LP's a few weeks ago when I saw them. Will had a red Ernie Ball Bongo. I think Will just picks up whatever he can find in red. lol
