I really enjoyed how much of this conversation focused on Gilad's unique style and voice on the guitar. Come for the gear, stay for the philosophy.

I’ve heard Gilad at the Vanguard with his group and in New Haven with “ Real Feels”. He is playing is so creative and musical; every performance takes one on a journey. Although not my primary instrument, he inspired me to take up guitar and take lessons. Gilad is an inspirational player, and I hope someday to play music on guitar in the same vein.

44:00 In an older video, he used that Boss OC-3 or an OC-2 and ran both a bass amp and a guitar amp. The lower strings would go through the bass amp and the high strings through the guitar amp. Try it out, it's a magical thing.
@karlderdelinckx Жыл бұрын
That’s a great trick. When improvising freely from one scale to another it’s not always easy to be in par with a bass player. Unless you use a strickt form and in this way you just play both parts. So great … should try it.

Rosenwinkel started using Moffas like 10 or 12 years ago? Sounds fantastic.
@ImOnlyFakingIt3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I somehow can't believe Gilad didn't see a Moffa first with Kurt Rosenwinkel. He's the one who put them on the map, really.

9:50 Holdsworth was also pianistic in his approach to cord structure and melodic harmony. I see a lot of that in Gilad, but they’re not the same, but like two distinctive piano players playing guitar.

Gilad has been blowing me away since his Montreux performances from 2006(?) -- Maybe the most developed voice of his generation, at such a young age. I miss those old days when Ari Hoenig's Punk Bop group was playing at Smalls like every other week, and you could stream it on the website!

As a non metal 7 string player i was really interested in the different low string tunings he is using. Because a low B is not very comfortable when you play certain chords. In a recent interview for the german gitarre&bass magazine he also mentions the confusion the extra string creates every time you switch back from 6 to a 7 string Instrument even after years of experience. Because a 7 string simply cannot be regarded as a 6plus1 guitar if you are not just playing power chords. Great player, great music!!!!
