No, you DO need to rig the camera. Not only does it impress the client, it also makes me feel like a big boy 😅

Riging a dslr is such a waste of money! you can do so much more with a small and light camera! leave the rig to big productions! even my red is almost naked if I shoot alone
@WhySteve8 ай бұрын
I rigged my Fujifilm X-T3 with a cage, handles, external batteries (NP-F) and external monitor and it was definitely a benefit to me. Solo shooting I can load luts in to my monitor and shoot log or even see myself better when doing talking head shots on my channel. Handles help a lot with grip and comfort. The added weight helps with handheld stabilization and the batteries, well, the batteries not only make it possible to shoot for 10 straight hours, but it can also be used in my lights if I don't have a power outlet. So to me, it was definitely worth the money!! Also, I bought brands like viltrox, neewer, smallrig, edelkrone, feelworld, as budget friendly alternatives.

Being so early is amazing - I wanted to say thank you for all of your great work, i remember starting out with your series about 3 point lighting at the beginning of my career and it helped me a lot. As well as your series about creating a videoproduction company, there were so many parallels and insights I've been sharing throughout my journey too! But now - let's watch the video! 😊😊

I would love to see like an introspect of when you guys would prefer to use a rig for scenes with movement and when do you prefer to use a gimbal, I know enough of cases like ads where stability is key or creative choices on films where a little shakyness gives more inmersion but even then, I would love to delve deeper into "why" choose a gimbal or a rig for moving shots :3.
@Andyax8 ай бұрын
Hi Fernando. Thanks for the idea. I think one great way to really make the best out of a gimbal, is to save it for when it really matters during the shoot. A gimbal towards a person or object can be really powerful if we have seen static shots before that. Remember to balance the effect you get of different camera angels and movements so you don't overdo them; Then they won't give any effect at all :)

great insights! but i've been shooting docs for years now and never saw anyone pulling focus on the right ( Solo operator ), and honestly run and gun stuff we mostly just pull focus straight of the barrell, but i guess its all just a personal preference. With a focus puller it's a different story
@AndrewPRoberts8 ай бұрын
YES, if I'm operating and pulling focus, the ff is on the left side, honestly I feel like I've never been on a set in general where the ff is on the right, I guess that's just a preference thing tho.
@jderrida698 ай бұрын
I always rigged the follow focus on the New York side (left) and only added one on Dummy (right) for a focus puller. I have never seen a solo op on Dummy.

Not a big fan of your rigs to be honest; putting the video transmitter with something as flimsy as a magic arm right behind your battery - which is also connected via D-tap - isn't the best of ideas. And also, you should be able to mount your full shoulder rig directly onto the tripod without having to remove the shoulder plate. And also, why do you keep the side handle and the strap? It's useless in those configurations
@poti7328 ай бұрын
I agree w you on the tripod part , dont know why is it a problem thst the monitor is powered via Dtap tho. The one Im not agreeing is that the magic arm mounting solution is bad, there are magic arms for example the titan from bright tangerine which can endure 8kg of weight, if you buy a shitty one ofc it will be shitty. I really hate how it looks on the rig tho , there are way better solutions.
@ClaythorneHeights8 ай бұрын
@@poti732 You should be able to pop out the battery and switch it easily, everything on the rig should be powered by the battery plate, plugging/unplugging a cable everytime you need to switch batteries is time-consuming and unpractical

The low budget film rig is just perfect imo! but I don't have the budget atm to get a cinema lens, vmount battery, focus puller, proper tripod.., etc etc I currently have the ZV-E1 with the sony 35mm f1.8 lens, smallrig cage & top handle.

where did you guys get the variable ND for the matt box?, I cant find it on the small rig website

Very nice video and a well placed collaboration! But the mounting of the DJI transmission on the cinema rig is just crap - and im pretty sure u guys know that :D Regardless showcasing the smallrig products Tilta makes a pretty interesting mounting plate, which allows you to place the dji transmission between the v-mount plate and the v-mount battery while still supplying power for both the camera rig and the transmission. but besides that, thanks for the great inspo!

Always stoked when you guys release a new video. Not gonna lie, the last two rigs didn’t seem that practical. A good docu setup usually needs a bigger zoom range than just 18-35mm especially on full frame to cover the action sufficiently and to get nice closeups. Other than that, nice setup. I own and use the exact same smallrig shoulder rig. When it comes to the commercial rig, looks a bit messy your cable management and the transmitter being at the back (whilst looking neat) is fairly unpractical since you will risk the camera operator blocking the signal with their body being so close. As an experienced first AC I can attest to this being a problem as water (60% of a human body) blocks video signals the most. I’d recommend it living either on the top or side of the rig instead. Just my two cents. Love what you guys do and can’t wait to visit the studio when I’m in Oslo one day Anders!
