my rig includes a cable with a shackle on one end and a chain hook on the other. but all my rigging is lighter, because I can't get anything more beefy than a comealong to most places I have to get trees out of. you never need rigging stronger than what you have to pull with. (but of course, usually the heavier rigging you have is better than the lighter rigging you'd have to spend money on)

Love the 'Close quarters' quandary. So you are a copy cat? Maybe you should be the producer and he can be the talent.

To make an eye in wire rope what we did sometimes in the fishing industry was make what we called a lazy splice , it is also called a farmers eye in some circles . Can come in handy sometimes and is a very easy skill to learn .

It always surprises me how well those cables grip bark. I keep expecting them to slip free, but you've never shown that happen, nor any concern that it might.

Id like to make some sort of diy sky line going down hill to my landing. Thoughts???
@kenbrown2808
@kenbrown2808 2 ай бұрын
how down is down? the biggest challenge of a downhill skyline is putting on the brakes at the bottom. otherwise, if you do it right, it will reduce a lot of effort. I'd say, unless you really need to cross bad terrain, leave the tail of the log dragging on the ground, to prevent a runaway. or if terrain and staff permit, a log zipline, where the log rides the line down the hill, and then you pull the carriage back up after your partner unrigs it.

The only secret I have learned about using cable clamps or "saddles" is..... never saddle a dead horse... the saddles always go against the live end of the wire

That cable clamp is on wrong. That saddle of the clamp should have been on the “live” end of the cable. It’s to prevent unnecessary damage to your cable. Remember this little quote: never saddle a dead horse.

the great thing about using free oversized cable that you already have kicking around is that you don't care if it's 10% weaker.
