I've been a musician all my life, but I'm a beginner on the flute. These tips are gold. Thank you!!! Now if I can just figure out how to get my main pinky knuckle to stop locking...

Thanks for the nice comment! Sometimes people like to do exercises on piano to reinforce "curling" finger positions rather than locked joints... if you have piano background, something like Hanon #1 and really focusing on rounded pinkies might help.... Good luck with your flute!

I regret not finding your channel sooner when I was in music conservatory in college and was having terrible right hand pains. Definitely using the knuckle of the pinky to change between C and B would have helped! And keeping the pinky between those two keys.

Thanks for the nice message, and sorry to hear about your right hand pain! I hope it's a thing of the past. Good luck with all of the pinky gymnastics! 🙂

@@AprilClaytonflute thank you for the reply! The only thing at the time that I figured out was that I was holding my pen 🖊 the wrong way when I wrote things down. When I corrected my writing ✍️ posture, the right hand pain was better but it did not fully go away. Thank you for the tips!

Great tips and if helps anyone I have very tiny hands with an exceptionally small pinky (so totally fun that by luck I have 3 of our flute choir pieces doing the absolute worst pinky switches) Anyways my flute is an inline G slightly older Muramatsu (oddly when I was younger contrary to what you’d believe I was getting tendinitis from offset …😵💫 normally be the opposite for small hands ) and on the end just under the square part of the C key Jeff basically invented a little bit of cork add for me (wish could add photo) and it helps quite a bit… one of our other ladies added it to her flute also …(could easily be done multiple models though sorta wish had that little roller to try too 🤔)… If have any tips on the part where you talked about using the joint on the switches I was on instinct doing this then switched off because my pinky was cracking and I didn’t know what I might be doing possibly wrong to not get it to crack ? Anyways probably check out some of your other videos your tips are solid and easy to understand thank you 😊

Thank you, teacher. 🙂 I'm am a beginner and trying to get a consistent solid sound that is not airy, or even get a sound at all when playing low C and B finger combinations. I also find myself gripping the flute too tightly------( Tension is real and a beast!👀 ). I do play the 🎹 already . So my little pinky finger is not a total lightweight. I'm trying to be aware of how I am holding it (the flute) and to avoid putting unnecessary force on the instrument, but it is really hard to keep these important factors front-and-center. 😩. By the way, 👍😎, this was very informative!!! SENSATIONAL, !!!! In fact, I have never heard these instructions anywhere, yet.

I need to put in that pinky time. I'm struggling with a piece that goes from E to C#, I find I am not fully covering the F and wondering if I should just put in the plugs.
