Great info Pat.I have a President Andy that came from Right Channel and a Lil Will mag mount. I travel from Ohio to south Florida and back twice a year. I am surprised how little chatter there is on channel 19 these days. I have used CB occasionally for 50 years and remember the 1970's and 1980's. The chatter was non-stop back then. Bear reports and road hazards are rarely reported on the radio. Even in the big metro areas the chatter is lacking. Maybe I'm missing something.

The problem with the 102 is it's 102 in Long
@AlaskanCharlie23 күн бұрын
@@josephatnip2398 Yeah, its long. From my experience though it outperforms every other antenna I have tried. Also, I have never had to worry about SWRs as every 102 I have ran had low SWRs on the first try. The only downside I have found is that it is 8 1/2 feet long. Mine is mounted on the top of my headache rack and is right around 13 1/2 feet at the tip so it does tag a lot of tree branches and so on but the great thing is that it flexes great and with a spring I don't have to worry about it snapping off even on low hanging branches.

CB continue to be a worthwhile second line of emergency communications If you've ever come upon a wreck or had an accident and your cell is in a no or poor signal area, a CB or a better, a CB with "other bands" or a compact ham rig "modified" to have CB frequencies can really save lives.

One thing that was not mentioned, is that there are vehicles made, where the body is an alloy and a magnet will not stick to it. I found this out about a yr ago. Rented a SUV and got s surprise when I tried to put my 10 meter antenna with a mag mount on the roof. I wound up finding a small space on the hood where the magnet would stick.

I ran into that as well; I usually travel with a Cobra 75 and a President Virginia antenna in my checked luggage. I had a Ford F-150 once as a rental and the aluminum body wasn't conducive to a mag mount. I stuck the antenna by the rear window (inside) and didn't transmit.

I plan on adding a CB radio as well as a 2m/70cm radio, scanner and potentially a HF mobile Transceiver i dont mind having multiple antennas or mobile transceivers on my ram 1500

I have CB myself, but I'm starting to convert to GMRS just to have another option. I'm getting very little traffic in the Bay Area / Santa Clara County in regards to feed on my CB transmissions. It's sort of sad, because of course BEFORE the birth of Cell's, we had lots of traffic because not everyone had the money to buy a cellphone that was portable back in the 90s, and not everyone wanted to stop at a payphone (pacbell).

102 Copper was the best antenna I've ever used. Next as predator 10K Next was the k40 Antennas that performed the worst was 102 Stainless steel Wilson firestick and Francis. Nothing beats the copper 102 The SS 102 was the worst

Some fiberglass sticks are very noisy above a certain speed, had a Twin-Log 5 fiberglass antenna, had to replace it with a thin steel whip, well i gonna try a center loaded one.

Up here in Canada, CB radios are pretty much obsolete as far as mobile use is concerned. Most commercial truckers are using VHF now and I don't know anyone who has a CB radio installed in their vehicle. I guess things are different in the U.S.

What would one recommend from an older Kia Sorento as an antenna mount? And antenna package to connect to my even older RCA Co-pilot or Uniden Pro 510xl. I think for space the Uniden would be better for my purposes. Do the door-frame mount fro antennas still exist?

Wouldn't it be ok to put a mag mount antenna on top of the cab?
@ve2cii6 ай бұрын
That is where I put my mag mount. On top of the cab, as long as there are no obstructions around it like the body of the box. Sometimes the box is higher than the top of the cab. Then you will probably want to go with mirror mounts.

you lost me at 4 watts. all cb,s i ever seen have been 5 watts and 12w pep for side band, some of the import radios out there will do 40 watts out of the box. also, the stainless 102inch whip is hard to beat in performance providing you can mount it on your vehicle and the most important thing is the S W R keep it as low as possible.
@RustyOpel5 ай бұрын
5 Watts input to the finals; 4 Watts Output to the antenna. That is the FCC "spec" for a "legal" radio. (12W SSB). I have a modified Galaxy that does 100W (94HP) but that isn't legal and Pat keeps his stuff legal. (Note - I use that radio on 10M primarily where that output is legal with my Extra class license but driving between NC & ME often I might be on CB with it.) Co-phased 4' Firestiks and I've DXed as far as Italy from NC so I'm happy with my rig.
@adamosity71273 ай бұрын
You left out NMO mounts for maximum ground plane performance and and ability to change radio types. No flopping coax thumpin your roof like a magnetic mount. When it's time to to sell the vehicle, pop on a plastic cap and the buyer will not care.
@tedmead4654 ай бұрын
Any antenna you use you need to properly tune it or match it to the coax. The best radio in the wprld will still work like $#!t if your antenna is poor. Most factory antennas are tuned close but not perfectly. While you can use an swr meter to tune the antenna its better to use an analyzer or nanovna Its more accurate ( you dont need the radio hooked up to the antenna to tune it)
