At any rate the singers of this generation are not on the same level as those of the 50's, 60's and 70's.

Presence and presentation. You could see it in this woman's eyes before she said, 'He's beautiful.' From there you could see the involvement - immediate acceptance and engagement. The voice from that guy is what sold. I thought Janis Joplin's voice was awesome by recording until I was a few feet from her in '69. She went from being a homely weird girl to one of the most potent females I've ever seen. And did it in a flash. Beautiful because she believed every bit of herself and her ability. And that is contagious.

Bobby Hatfield had a slight cold, suffered from stage fright, it was a live performance, so no do overs, and his mother was in the audience and seeing him sing in public for the first time. What he did is a performance for the ages. No Autotune, no enhancements, no backup singers, just him, a microphone, and a talented orchestra composed of fantastic musicians.

I'm 77 years old and was blessed to have grown up with this music. Today there's social media and influencers and anyone who makes a recording is a "star", every person who is in a movie is a "star". People, with no talent or little talent come to believe it themselves. There are sill great artist out there today it's just you have to wade thru the back water static of continuous media to find the actual talented ones.

I'm 76 and agree 100%! Too much of today's music is manufactured in electronic factories -- it's a product, not art. Today's music consumers are being manufactured, too. We listened to whatever the AM disc jockeys played on the air. If we enjoyed an artist, we bought his/her/their records. Today, consumers are "trapped in the playlist." They stream songs online and then AI "learns" and "remembers" their preferences and feeds them an endless stream of recommendations of songs that are just like the favorites. New artists and ideas don't stand much of a chance. Today's playlist system wouldn't take a second look at breakout songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Not just talent. The artists of today are talented as well. It was the WORK he did in rehearsal, that made sure he didn't miss a note. If you couldn't hit it every time, you didn't get to be a professional. That goes for every instrument as well. Perfect or fired. That was the standard.

People that are actually music fans, musicians or just good people would not find ways to tear any artist or musician down in any way. No matter who it is, they have either talent or have put in a lot of work to get to any level of success. If you have worked to play in even a band that plays for 20 people in a dive bar still requires you to be able to play or sing. A real musician or music lover would appreciate all facets of the music world. Plus the things people say like this only shows bad things about yourself and that you are actually quite ignorant to the world of music since the world is bigger than the USA...

Bobby was only 25 when he did this and was a consummate professional. What many people don't know is that he also had profound stage fright and would usually throw up violently before every performance...and then he & Bill Medley would go out in front of the audience and sing their hearts out. As people have said Bobby Hadley was a tenor with the voice quality of some one that was trained for many years but was not trained. The true quality of his voice was from God. The performance was live on TV the Andy Williams show small studio very little backup music small live audience. I watched the show with my mom and dad and several anties. what great performance. Great song has been in heart ever since that day.

I was 15 years old when he sang this song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. I'm 74 yrs old and never get tired of listening to him this song. Bobby owned this song. No one sang this better than he did. No auto tune, just pure raw talent! He had a voice. You need to listen to his other songs, such as summertime. RIP Bobby! The difference was that in those days bands and artists weren't manufactured by the music business, they came up the hard way by doing their apprenticeship touring the clubs and smaller venues long before getting air time on TV and radio. They were already skilled musicians and performers, with their own unique characters and style. Only those who had the raw talent were able to hit the big time in those days.

That's very true. Music became an Industry, where its hunger for profits drove to manufacture music than create. That part of the problem where it started Now? Autotune was just tuning instrument which was used beyond what it was intended for. Additionally, commercial advertises control what left of Radio, the once pure musical medium for the most part and drive older songs to DEATH for sake of making money for commercial adds. I think there talented people, many who can write these gems like this one. Where artists whom have chops to sing them can them on and make them memorial ones. Its just way music made today, closest thing you'll see to an original emotional song, no one will notice unless people up thumb and frankly hard get rid of autotuning unless someone causes it to be trend and musicians can make fare living making such music.

Thats not true, it was done back then too. The monkees, the association, every band that came out of Capitol records barely played their own instruments. Dick Clark created Chubby Checker because he thought Hank Ballard, the actual writer of many of the songs was too rough around the edges. We tend to look back and see only the good, which there was a lot of, but there was a lot of bad and some bullshit thrown in. The Beach Boys didn't play the songs on the record, it was The Wrecking Crew, you can watch the documentary, it's free on KZbin right now. We just have better equipment today, yet we have little in the way of real good musicians.

There’s still millions of tracks with vocoals recorded without any pitch correction (which started in the 70s) today. But at this time it was common for artist to lip-sync for tv shows and live performances. I think we should understand, since the invention of recording there is some kind of manipulation and editing done for major release. Technology shouldn’t really determine an artist greatness.

Sadly this beautiful, soulful voice was only on this earth a short time. This young man who gave us so much of himself died in his sleep of a heart attack in 2003, at the age of only 38. He had extreme stage fright and would throw up before performing on stage and yet his singing was so calming.

I don't like live versions as a rule, but this one was tremendous. It just shows you how much current artists rely on technology. He actually sang it VERY close to the studio version, almost identical, which does not happen with current artists.

I used to feel the same way yet I implore you to look up your favorite artists and listen to their live performances. If they blow their respective studio recordings out of the water they cement their spot as your favorite. Also it doesnt matter if they have to be an exact same as the studio version, people don't go to concerts to literally listen to something they could just play in their car or phone. If the artist/band can elevate their songs with twists, flares or something to change up while maintaining the essence of the song they prove that they are true performers and musicians. I'm not bashing you, just asking to listen for yourself. All I ever listen to from my favorite bands are usually live performances.

You are spot on - this is a "live" performance. In 1965 there was no auto-tune or other computer gizmos to adjust for tone or voice or any of that. this is just pure talent. His 3-octave range is amazing and he reaches the high notes with ease, clarity and full tone control. Others have covered this song since 1965, but Bobby (RIP) owns this song. The numerous vocal experts that have listened to this live performance all agree- voice, tone and pitch control are absolutely superb! Your reaction is wonderful. Thank You.

IMO, this live music performance was the greatest male vocal performance of the twentieth century (1965). From the years 1955 to about 1968, I would rank this period of time as the center and peak of the many quality performances from other music groups as well. I am 81 and have heard several artists before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of their albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we know. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

There is this weird moment when it looks like this guy from long ago was singing directly to THIS woman. That's because the raw openness and sincerity of the performance grabbed her faster than the physical appeal. I think if you were to ask her she felt 'love' of sorts from watching. That is the power of 'being' a song. There's a strange power music has to unify a human being. Athletes and intellectuals talk about 'the zone'. I've experienced it - anyone passionate about a discipline or art is capable of reaching a zone experience. To watch somebody do it consistently by nature (he had just gotten past a chest cold - you can kind of hear the stuffiness when compared with the clear studio version - this was his first TV performance and his mom was in the audience. So he's under max pressure here - and it's effortless. Because here he IS the song.) is a moving event every time. Tell most artists now to 'be the song' and it's huh?

The Righteous Brothers were and still sound better than any singer or group today . They didn't need auto tune back then because they had talent and class . The " music " today is nothing but trash . I would put the 60s music up against any genre of music. Rap is horrendous ..... no talent and definitely no class . Country music had been unraveling over the years. " Pop " music today , has lost its fizz . T V commercials use the oldies in their ads ....not todays trash . I was raised on oldies and Motown and I have watched the music deteriorate over the decades and the industry has hit rock bottom. It can't get much worse than it is now . There are a few good songs out today, but not like it was when singers had hit after hit .

No, Bill isn't playing any instrument during this performance. It was the Andy Williams show orchestra accompanying Bobby. Bill played piano, sang barely audible backup and produced the studio recording.

This song is actually a cover of the original that was part of the soundtrack for a 1955 prison movie titled Unchained. Since then, this song is one of the most covered songs in music history. The Righteous Brothers cover is considered to be the Gold Standard however. This version of the song made it onto The Billboard Hot 100 twice. Originally after its release in 1965 and again after another re-recorded version and the original version both charted after the re-recorded version being in the movie Ghost’s soundtrack in 1990. In 1990 the original recording hit #13 on the charts. The re-recorded version hit #19 on the charts but sold enough copies to be certified as a platinum recording. The newer version of the song had much more success outside of the US topping the charts in several countries. If you listen to both versions back to back you’ll pick out the differences especially the ending of the song. I personally prefer the 1965 version you reacted to.

Bobby was very unique, one of a kind, and his voice was definitely a gift from God. When he sang you could actually feel the music, the emotion, the pain, the happiness, the love. This song will always be Bobbys, and all of his solos are amazing. I could listen to him 24/7. Try I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons, or For Your Love, or Crying in the Chapel. And if you really want to cry some more, listen to his Stay With Me, I believe he is feeling every single sad note he is singing, but he's like that with all his songs!) As a side note, he could have been a professional baseball player, he chose his music instead!

This song was kind of personal to many of that time. The music so special then that it actually could touch your heart, it spoke to US soldiers serving in Vietnam, of their feelings and worries of the love they left behind and would that love still be theirs on their return home.

This was the first time Bobby performed with his mother in the audience and he was nervous! He killed it! I had the wonderful privilege in the mid 80's to see them live, and never expected that Unchained Melody would still be sung like this. It was, and completely blew me away. I shall never forget it. They were awesome.

Bisscute back in the 60's and 70's the only way to become successful was through airplay and live performances. To even get noticed you first had to be good live and develop a fan base which then allowed you to get airplay on the radio. Back then there were fewer acts that rose to fame, but those that did were the most talented and had paid their dues. It's simply quality over quantity

The 60's and 70's were the greatest era's of music ever... especially the 70's. The difference is they sang songs you can understand, relate to and actually hear the words. Also, they incorporated the music as an interictal part of the song. There were hundreds of exceptional songs and artists, dig in, you will see it wasnt that there were limited numbers but you have limited knowledge of them. Good luck!

What more can you say about one of the finest live performances of all time. Covered by more than 670 artist but this is the gold standard by The late great Bobby Hatfield. His vocal range is unbelievable. This is performed live on the Andy Williams Show. Along with his partner Bill Medley make up imo the greatest duo of all time. If you want more of their songs you need to listen to You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling which was the most played song on radio and tv in the 20th Century. Another big hit Soul and Inspiration. Also try Rock and Roll Heaven which is a tribute song to stars that have passed. There are so many more but I don’t want to take up your message board. Thanks for playing this masterpiece.

I think "what was in the water" was presence, meaning they could focus on their musical gifts without the distraction of the rest of the world interfering. Life was localized for the most part, and I understand this, having been born in 1958, so even though we were aware of things going on around the world, you pretty much concentrated on what was going on in your immediate presence. The only way to really express yourself creatively is to be alone, working on whatever it is you want to do. These singers had to be aware of their gifts to such an extent (like Stevie Ray Vaughan or Led Zeppelin) that a lot of time was spent just becoming what they were going to present, quite literally. It's just magical what these singers could do without much assistance. When a song is learned to a point where it's sung like this one, you get hooked by the soul, the genuine honesty of the music and artist. Quite amazing. Thanks for your lovely reaction. It's interesting that you chose not to wear any makeup for this reaction, because as the song went along, you got prettier, if that makes any sense. Perhaps it had to do with the tension you had, melt away as the song took you away. Music is healing isn't it? ❤❤

The late Roy Orbison was a singer in the 60's and has an extensive list of wonderful songs. To some he is a legend. I find that as his voice matured, it only got richer as he got older. One of my favorites is "In Dreams"; from the 2019 "Black and White Night 30". Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
