I never really listened to Rihanna before. She has an ok voice, lots of confidence and range. I had a nice chat with a professional singer, a few days ago, Finnish singer Tarja Turunen. She explained the differences of styles of singing, what is easy and difficult.

@Rupert Pupkin I tend to listen to Mezzo-Sopranos, which you find in Classical and Symphonic Metal. Tarja is an example, but you won't hear about her if you don't follow those musical genres. Face in palms in laughter.

@@nwlondonmetaller3427 There are lots of mezzo-sopranos in pop music as well, like Miley Cyrus, Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Rihanna herself. I don't think it really depends on the genre but you're kind of right. Mezzo-soprano voices normally suit big arrangements like classical and rock because they have big voices and they may as well outsing the whole choir/instrument section in a performance if they're not backed by loud instrumentation.

@@varunravi27 Sorry to say this, Mezzo- Soprano is like: Laura Macrì or Patricia Janečková. Mariah Carey said, her mother was a Mezzo-Soprano, but for her to do this she needs a lot of training. You will find Mezzo-Sopranos are fixated on Classical, but some will also sing in Symphonic Metal: Tarja, Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Laura Macri (Mayan). Even Sarah Brightman has crossed genres. Sadly I don't see Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Rhianna at that level. Definitely not Adele. I will tell you what Pop and Rn'b singers who have been trained for Mezzo-Soprano style? Claire Richards from Steps and Nicole Scherzinger from Pussy Cat Dolls. Both did a good job full out Mezzo-Soprano. If you see a Mezzo-Soprano sing, you will see the difficulty factor, compared to Pop or Rock. I have seen André Rieu. The singers he has are more than just amazing. I saw Lady Ga Ga and Adele live. Both were good, but not as good a full-time professional Mezzo-Soprano which I have experienced.

@@nwlondonmetaller3427 In case you didn't know, Nicole Scherzinger is far from being a mezzo-soprano. She was classically trained as a lyric soprano and definitely has a soprano tessitura and tone/timbre. Floor Jansen is also a (dramatic) soprano. Less than a quarter of the ladies you mentioned are true mezzos. It's weird that you think pop singers have to be on the "level" of classical and rock singers to be mezzo-sopranos. Voice types are based on the vocal tone/timbre and tessitura of singers, not on vocal technique. Just because pop singers don't have voices that are as developed as singers from these genres does not mean they aren't also mezzos.
