I'm Jamaican American and I just have to tell you best Rihanna work cover I ever heard. When I saw you I didn't see color I saw a person with Talent this 2016 and I pray and hope you go far. Rihanna has her way and you have your own way and that's what truly defines a singer to take a song and make it your own. I believe in you, your voice gave me goosebumps.

i actually like her cover and im from the caribbean. she can sing, but what rih is saying in the song is different from what shes singing. the song she's singing is a type of song that shouldn't be covered. the vibes and language is out of it. nice voice she has tho

+m trebla I agree... I get why some people are upset, because people are being rude about the original song and complaining that it's "not in English" etc and then the same people come here and love this version apparently. But that's THEIR problem, not the problem of this artist who wanted to cover a song. You don't have to like her version, but doing a cover of this song doesn't make her a racist.

Melly Reed First offf. When you talk about "blonde" or colored hair i hope you know that fully black people are able to have blonde, brown, ginger, natural hair. Just because we are black doesn't mean we lack of variety. Secondly, Why should we be unable to wear a style of hair just as everyone else. When a girl straightens her hair, thats how she wants to wear it and she should be able to do so. No one is denying their culture. The shit ain't cool when someone who has no culture snatches and tries to take someone elses and is defended for it, as soon as someone defends their rightfully own culture we are turned down by people like you. THANKS VERY MUCH HUNTY. DISMISSSED.

@C00kii0
@C00kii0 8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a cover,she has a lovely voice. But it will still be about race. when a non-poc does a cover the majority take away the upbeat tempo add pianos/guitars and sing it slowly. in short they make it sound like elevator music in a way... when a poc covers another poc song they add their own inflection and style without completely altering and ripping the culture out of the song. for a person who's first language isn't English and to mock how fetty,drake and others rap (while still using English ) makes what you say somewhat invalid.

+C00kii0 no yeah I agree she white washed the hell out of this song and it sucks and it's unfortunate/shitty that people think this song is better than the original. Like she has a decent voice but this version is no where near as great as the original. This song involved her culture and this white girl isn't a part of that culture so shouldn't be attempting it imo. White people are just always getting praised for mediocrity and stealing shit/credit/focus from POC. Damn shame.

I think people are responding more to her ethnicity than her race. And yes. we would be saying the same thing if bey did a bad job (prob worse) it's because the song lacked anything new and was stripped off the personality it had. why didn't she add a piece of her ethnic music to it to make her own. it wa just a bad job.

People bitching that a white girl "took" Rhiannas Barbadian roots away from the song..... If there was not a video with the song, just a plain screen, and someone told you it was a 22 year old unknown black singer from the UK (who just doesnt have a Barbadian accent) would it be a problem that the song doesnt keep its Barbadian roots? I think not. Your issue is that she is white. And that shouldnt matter. Its a good cover.

Her ACCENT is Barbadian...... good try at being insulting though Robyn Rihanna Fenty (/riˈænə/ ree-an-ə;[2] born February 20, 1988) is a Barbadian singer and songwriter. Born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown

@BO_Riddle 8 жыл бұрын
I was responding to your post where you said "Barbadian roots away from the song." In reference to the SONG and NOT Rihanna's roots. The topic at hand is the song no? The song is Jamaican-styled, in a Jamaican dialect, shot in a Jamaican dancehall in Toronto Canada. /End of.
@Motojoe23
@Motojoe23 8 жыл бұрын
+fi stla your selective reading/trolling need work. I said Rihanna's Barbadian roots and Rihanna's accent. The girl singing didn't change the rhythm or the words. So she didn't change the song. The only things that changed is her accent or lack of and her skin color. And had her skin color not changed people wouldn't be bitching. Let the race shit go. If they didn't know this was a white girl singing they wouldn't be bitching or even mention the lack of accent as "taking away from Rihanna".
@BO_Riddle
@BO_Riddle 8 жыл бұрын
Wtf. You're the only one bringing race into this. You made a statement about the song and I called you on it. Period. Rihanna being Barbadian is irrelevant. Once again, the topic at hand is the song!! The song is Jamaican-styled, in a Jamaican dialect, shot in a Jamaican dancehall in Toronto Canada. Did you just disregard all those facts? I called you on it and now you're bringing race into it. I can't even.

But it's not like others will be doing a cover for this song same song. Yet! I don't see other people with other skin colors attacking them for doing the exact same cover song, just like this girl. Your main target is not this girl, it's the arrogant judgemental people who are writing on the post who you want to target. It's not like she said anything horrible to anyone. She just did a cover song, and stupid people do what they do best.

Just read the comment section my friend, white people are doing too much and its just offending. It's about time that they start to respect and appreciate Black culture, it's 2016!! C Will Then Attack the white racist people. Not her, she didn't even do anything wrong. She only Sang an cover song, she wasn't the one who decided to say racist stuff, so then leave her out of this; if this is more then about music. I get it what you guys are fighting for. But if you guys are going to attack someone just, then not an innocent white girl who only sang an cover song. Sometimes in life there will always be hateful and racist people, because that's the environment they grew up with. But you just can't use violent words and doing the same thing. What would that take you anywhere? Obviously nowhere. When you guys say, black culture. It's more than a black thing, as I say look into yourself "You point a finger at a person blaming someone, there will always be three pointing back at yourself."

Why are you slamming her for singing it in a way she wants to.. Damn. It's only a cover, and if you have a look at all the rest of her videos, she sings slowly and chills it down because that's her style. She isn't uncultured just because she's making her own version. Get real.

Lunar Reef I'm actually not calling her a swine. But all these "now I finally understand the lyrics" and "now the song is good" comments, made me think about that line from Toy Story. A lot of white people are truly uncultured and it shows here. When they only appreciate the song or deem it good, once the accent is taken away. It's fucked up.

For all those offended by a white girl singing it like this... it's just a cover, it's not gonna kill you. If you prefer the other version then just listen to the other version. She's singing a slower cover as her own stripped down version, many people do this to a lot of songs, doesn't matter what race they are. Have you never seen an acoustic cover of a song? Or is this your first time on KZbin? Also, yes, it is easier to understand. That's simply because she annunciated the words more without the Caribbean flavor to it. If a black girl would've done the cover the same way, then what? Everyone is just mad cause she's white. Rihanna is from Barbados and is showcasing her culture through her song. If Samantha Harvey would've done it the same way as Rihanna, I'm sure all of you would have had something negative to say about how she's stealing from their culture. People, she is simply doing her own cover to the song to demonstrate her singing, not to steal someone's song.

I like this and she really has a freaking amazing voice (that I could never achieve) to me it has nothing to do with Samantha from what I see she unluckily was just placed in the middle of it cause she was one of the very few people that made this song popular with her version because some ignorant people didn't appreciate Rihanna celebrating her culture and made fun of it until she and a couple others came along and was shared around suddenly it's something "cool". And some more people instead of targeting the ones who made fun of it found it easier to target her which isn't fair at all..

OFCOURSE there are racial issues that MUST be dealt with but don't you think that this song was covered because it was actually LIKED and INSPIRED her to cover it? Do you REALLY think she was thinking, "I should steal this because it's made by a black artist & then make my own white version for white people" NO I'm pretty sure the odds are she loves the song and could be a fan of Rhiannas. Songs are covered into other genres ALL THE TIME, I think it's cool to see other versions, it's CREATIVE regardless whose singing it. And I'm pretty sure she doesn't speak PATOIS either so she HAD to make her own version in order to sing it. ANYBODY who doesn't speak patois REGARDLESS of their race would have to do that too if they wanted to sing the song. I plan to perform this song myself in my own way because I am inspired and love the song & want to sing it good. Plus it's pretty OBVIOUS shes an upper class white woman that DOESN'T understand black culture nor struggle but there is a DIFFERENCE between APPROPRIATION & INSPIRATION. Appropriation is not a white girl singing a song by a black famous person. Rhianna herself said MADONNA was her biggest IDOL and INFLUENCE, does that have anything to do with Madonna being white? Is Rhianna stealing? NO she was INSPIRED because it's about the MUSIC and that's what this video is about, the MUSIC. If you think this video is about RACE then YOUR MAKING IT THAT WAY & you should STOP & save the hate for the ACTUAL racist bigots.

No one is mad because she's white, they're mad they she took the Caribbean feel out of the song and replaced it with a bland sounding song. Rih is Caribbean and she is speaking in her native language. The words are still understandable when Rih sings but because of her accent and the fast pace of the song it's hard for some ppl (white ppl) to understand her. But now that this singer covered the song in a slower pace and without an accent now everyone is like "I finally can understand her". Some ppl were claiming that Rih was speaking jibberish in her song. I didn't want to make this about race but white ppl have been known to critique things POC do, do it nearly similar, and then praise it when I non POC does it. A popular KZbin channel called Barely Political made a parody of Work mentioning this video and white ppl so I decided to check out this video and it's comments and BP were right

+RacqualTaylor and her intentions weren't to take the Caribbean feel from the song it was just to cover it.

I couldn't give less of a fuck if a Chinese man sang this song. It's okay to change covers while still keeping the original ESSENCE of the song. But for people to say they enjoy this bland version better when Rhianna only had a few dialects in the fast paced song, saying how Caribbean dialect is gibberish. This makes me angry.
