Great to see Rik again! I can out old code you folks by a chunk! We had BASIC and PASCAL classes back when I was in high school, first on VIC-20s, then Commodore 64s and Apple IIEs. I still have my 5.25" floppy disks and disk notcher from those days, although my personal C64 is my 2nd one as the power supply on my original C64 blew up in the 90s.

One of the biggest issues with something like gpt is that it’s absolutely awful for the environment besides the generative side of it stealing from everything available on the internet, I appreciate Ash and Aenne agreeing to the fact that it’s not good at anything. Not only are we destroying the planet but if someone can’t even write an email on their own is it really their place to be given credit for it and employed on that basis. We’re watching the destruction of reading and comprehension skills in real time, I really wish more people understood that they’re only hurting themselves and everyone by using those things

It's kind of interesting because in Australia, the two main political parties are having a tiff over this. The centre-left are quoting modelling by CSIRO (our independent science and industry research body) that in Aus it would be cheaper to continue on the route of renewables + firming (batteries etc.) over nuclear (cost of newables going down, Australia having high capacity for renewables, current widespread use of rooftop solar making grid Kw/h near $0 at times, low pop density, etc.). Whereas the centre-right are quoting modelling from a consultant that indicates the opposite (but assumes less demand for electircty in future than CSIRO, that coal power plants can last a decade longer before decomission, that Aus can bring in expertise from overseas to install nuclear to avoid overblown time and budgets CSIRO anticipates, etc.). Currently it is illegal at both state and federal level to use nuclear power.

I find the generative ai as "theft" interesting. If someone studied Picasso, and so can recreate his work, is that theft? Yes, it's the machine and not the person using it do the work, but is it any different than a person? Machines have been stealing jobs and replacing artisans for a century now, how is AI generation different? Something very close, CAD systems have nearly replaced drafters. You can say, "I want a wall here with 2x6s (instead of 2x4)", and it will give you a wall with the studs within regulations apart and ready to build. So I find it funny that most people forget that this fight has been fought before. Replacing workers with machines is nothing new.

​@@stumpt I wanted my own Megaman like character and hired an artist to make an Megaman X style character with specific visual attributes. Would that be theft? No, because the character, though having the style, is a unique character. I paid that artist, can capcom sue him for damages? No, because it is a unique character. Which brings up the point, of what kind of prompt you are using with the AI. Someone's drawing in an image prompt, absolutely theft. That prompt is someone's work which you are editing and passing as your own. Someone's style but text prompts, getting gray. Other artist could start drawing like them but making unique images too. Styles aren't unique to the artist. A general style with text prompts, not at all. The AI at this point is no different than an artist who's inspirations have created a unique variant to a method. And don't get me wrong, I'm working on a TTRPG that if I can get enough following to go commercial will hire artist for the respect of talent needed, over AI. But it isn't as black and white as you say. Best to advise avoiding it if you don't understand the difference, but not all of it is theft when considering all of the ways it is made. Many of which happens all the time on 99% of commissions.

No reason to bring facts and reason to them. I doubt they know about OpenAIs o3 ChatGPT model that was previewed earlier. Or Notebooklm released by Google which does a great job of helping people study for topics by allowing them to question the articles/videos given to the bot. As well as the fact it makes a podcast for the user so they can get a quicker study to properly ask questions. Or the fact that KZbin is owned by Google and Google uses generative ai, suggested by Gemini so they're actively funding this with their videos since they have ads. Or that all the top companies are funding AI and nuclear energy to make this a better use of energy. Disney is funding this as well since they have a deal with Apple who has a deal with OpenAI for the recent iOS 18 update with Siri basically becoming ChatGPT. Also, there's a search function of ChatGPT to provide the articles it's linking so you can see what's referring and seeing fully what it's talking about. There's a lot more to this than the first year where it had to get data. Like Google where now engineers have to use SEO to properly be seen as the top site on Google and work by Googles rules. Google scrapes through the entire internet and takes date to show them on one database so users can see it. There's more to technology than just it taking data and using energy.
