Well after endless research and the watching of videos ...I have finally pulled the trigger and purchased a much wanted and needed bandsaw for my shop, and Yes Ken your video was the one that finally tipped me in the direction of the 10-326 Rikon delux band saw , with the rolling base , assortment of blades. And WOW what a beauty she is , just received her 2 days ago and set her up, everything went as planned without issue and I cannot wait to put her to work. Thanks Ken for taking the time for creating such informative in-depth videos/ tutorials it’s people like you that keeps u-tube alive and kicking. Cheers to you 🍻

excellent video. I particularly like your method of work- slow, patient, methodical and thorough - in this and your other demonstrations. Its easy to get carried away with the Christmas morning feeling of a new machine in the shop and forget or rush through the tedious work of careful set up. your cautions about that are well taken. thanks for that especially.

Thank you. Your videos helped me decide to purchase one of the Rikon 10-326 models last week and they helped me set it up properly. I am very happy with my choice and it runs like a charm. I only wish I had found your site before buying my first floor model bandsaw from a competitor, which proved to be of very poor design and quality. I sold it after less than a year of ownership and it has a home at a nearby lumber mill where it is used for large resaw work. For that it works well. Your patience, attention to the small things and your "non-brand" attitude is really appreciated. Got to go now, I am building a Bandsaw circle jig... oh, I will thank you for your Bandsaw circle jig video when I am done the jig! So many great videos... so little time. ;-)

I remember you made a small wood knob to made tightening and loosening the blade clamp on your scroll saw. I saw and idea for the bearings on this saw. A square stick with a slot in the end. And the slot is the width of the "handle" on the bearings.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Жыл бұрын
That's actually a great idea Scott. In fact, the project that I made for the scroll saw could easily be adapted for use on the band saw bearings of the 10-326. Thanks for the suggestion. I may have to look into doing that for my saw.

saw a presentation last night, where the presenter said to center the deepest part of the gullet on the tire. The manual saws to do it the way you did it. Hard to argue with the presenter thought.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Жыл бұрын
There are several ways of "truing" your blade to the tire Scott. Some prefer the method you described and some prefer to have it centred. There are good arguments for both and honestly, I don't see a problem with either one. It all boils down to personal preference at that point. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

Completed setting up the saw today Kenny. Both videos were a great help. The trunnion hex bolt on my unit was 16mm, which they didn't provide. Luckily 16mm is equal to 5/8" or I would've been headed to the store for a new wrench. I may anyway just to have one in the bag of tools in the cabinet. I like to keep a set of tools needed for each machine handy for adjustments and maintenance. Keeps me from having to dig through my toolbox for that wrench that's always at the bottom.

LOL. That's a great idea about keeping the set of tools with each station. I do the exact same thing for the exact same reason. I was re-sawing some 8" wide maple today and the 10-326 didn't have a single problem. Went through like a hot knife through a brick of butter. Made about 7, 14" long passes through the 8" wide material and the saw begged for more. So far, so good for me and I hope that you enjoy your new toy as well. Be sure to let me know what you think.

I've watched both the assembly and setup videos for the Rikon 10-326 bandsaw, and found them extremely helpful, even after muddling through the assembly using just the manufacturers instruction manual and video tutorials (not the best). However I'm having some difficulty in keeping the fence parallel with the table track. I find it awkward with the fence attached to the fence holder and guide bar only on one side of the table. Can you direct me to a video or explanation on how to use this accurately? It would be appreciated.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you found the first two videos helpful but I don't have a video on the setup of the fence Stephen. I wouldn't be too concerned about keeping the fence perfectly aligned with the mitre slot of the table. The important part is that it has the proper measurement at the cutting edge of the blade. If your fence is really out of whack with the mitre slot, you can adjust it using the tracking knobs on the fence. Loosen the set knob and the adjust the pivot knob of the fence and when you are happy with it, you can tighten down the set knob again. I think you will find that in most situations, even if the fence is a little askew of the mitre slot, it will still cut properly and accurately. The fence pivots to adjust for blade drift etc and sometimes, it just wont be parallel with those mitre slots. I hope this helps a little. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

This and the assembly videos - first rate! Just got mine a couple of weeks ago and could not have put it together without your help. Thanks! Couple of quick questions: 1) Should the blade be centered in the table insert? Mine is closer to the rear of the insert. In your video, the first time you show adjusting the guide bearings the blade appears to be offset from the center, but the second time you go through setting the bearings the blade is centered in the insert. Or is that just the camera angle? 2) The manual indicates the rear bearing guide should be just clear of the blade and the left/right roller guides should be 1/32" from the blade (size of a business card). Do you have the guides actually touching the blade? Or did I miss something? Thanks again.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 жыл бұрын
As for the blade position Larry, in my opinion, it should be as close to centred on the tables opening as possible. Once you get the blade running in the middle of the wheels, if your blade is too far back in the opening, you can always adjust your table from front to back to get the blade closer to centre. It's not imperative to the saws operation but if the blade should wander on your wheels, having it centred will give it somewhere to go instead of it digging into your table insert. The difference in appearance in the video could be camera angle or it could be prior to adjustment. Not quite sure which is the case here. As for the bearings, I would not suggest that the bearing be touching the blade and you are absolutely correct that there should be an air space between the bearing and the blade. I usually go with the gap equal to a dollar bill but a business card will do the trick as well. The bearing will spin while cutting but should be pretty much still when not actively cutting stock. This applies to the guide and the thrust bearings on the top end of the table and the lower bearings below the table. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words on the show.
@larrykear3451

Just a question I've always heard you don't let the bearings touch the blade when the wheels spin. You squeezed yours to touch. Is this accurate or is it supposed to have a paper thin gap?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 9 ай бұрын
It's kind of ironic that you ask this question today as just yesterday, I filmed the clips needed to produce a show on the proper setup of band saw bearings. While it may look like the bearing are touching, that isn't the case. There is a tiny gap. If you want to get really technical, the gap between the guide bearings and the blade should be about .005" and the gap between the thrust bearing and the blade should be about .015". Paper money is a good source of a spacer as it usually measures approximate .004". As for the thrust bearing, .015 is approximately 1/64". The gaps are very small but they are there. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for taking the time to ask your question.

For the tilt box electronic tool to be accurate doesn't the table of the saw have to be level to the floor as well otherwise it won't show a true 45 degree angel from the table top? Given that all floors are not level would it be better to just use a 45 degree manual tool to measure against the blade like you did for measuring the 90 degree?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 жыл бұрын
The electronic tilt box tool is not a level. Once the table was set perfectly at 90 degrees to the blade, the tilt box was then placed on the table and zeroed out. From there, the table was tilted to the 45 degree mark on the printed tilt scale of the saw and then the results from the printed scale and the tilt box were compared. If the tilt box was being used to square a blade to the table, the tilt box would first be zeroed out to the blade and then placed on the table. The table would then be tilted until the tilt box was zeroed out again. The opposite applies to squaring a blade on the table saw. First the tilt box is zeroed out to the table and then the tilt box is place on the blade and the blade is tilted until it reaches that zero mark again. The tilt box reads angles, it does not show level. I hope this helps a bit Paul. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 жыл бұрын
The gap between the blade and the guide and thrust bearings is a very tiny one Rich. It is about as thick as a dollar bill. I could give you the exact measurement but I doubt that you will set your saw to that exact standard. I don't know of anyone who does. As close to the blade as you can get without touching is a good guideline. That way, any deflection of the blade will be automatically controlled by the bearings without having to have them needlessly spinning while in contact with the blade all the time. So in a nutshell, yes, a gap, but the tiniest gap you can manage. Thanks for tuning in.

I can't remember if I stated it in this video or another video on the 10-326 but I don't put any faith at all in the tension gauges. You are far better to tension each blade manually to get the tension. I think I know the "squealing" that you are talking about and I can almost hear it in my head. Without actually being there to see it, I'm going to say that it is your thrust or guide bearings. They don't like to spin at the higher speeds (on any saw). Try backing them off just slightly so that they are not spinning while the saw is running. If the "squeal" goes away, then that is definitely your noise and it's nothing to worry about. I've had several saws that have guide and thrust bearings and the bearings always squealed at higher speeds. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

Thanks for the info Kenny, your video is just what I was looking for. Quick question for you. I'm finding it difficult to tilt the table via the provided handle. It's tortuous to turn. Glad that you found the show to be useful Sean. After quite some time of working with the 10-326, I posted a review and one of the things that I touch on is the tilting mechanism of the table. The weight and stability of the table is spectacular and while the rack and pinion adjustments are a great idea, they can't overcome the weight of the table and a little bit of help with lifting one edge, goes a long way. Returning the table to its flat position is much easier as the weight of the table now assists the rack and pinion mechanism. Ken, great 2 videos. I currently have a older, under used, delta 14 inch bandsaw but I’m now looking for larger resaw ability as I’ve started bowl turning and logs just don’t fit under the existing 6 inch clearance of the delta. Question, my shop floor is not flat but up/down an 1/8 inch here and there. I use Delta’s mobile base for the same reason as you - small shop. One difference in bases is that the Delta has levelling feet on the front when lowered. Does the Rikon have holes for feet that could be added? Is your floor flat? Any issues? Thx.

@acutabove_woodworkings 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words on the show Don, I appreciate it. I have to say that the floor in my shop is not flat at all and it does cause some issues for me. The tools have no problem rolling around on them but I sometimes have to adjust the bandsaw to get it to a flatter area. I keep a pack of cheap shims in the cabinet of the saw to slide under one "leg" when I can't get it to sit level. I'm not sure if there are holes in the "feet" for installing levelling devices. I'm sure that it wouldn't be hard to drill some though and that might be a modification that I will do. I think it will depend on how out of level they would put the saw. Thus far, those shims have been a simple fix that has served me well but I like your levelling feet idea. I will be out in the shop this afternoon for a bit and I will check for the holes for you if you like but as I said, there wouldn't be an issue in drilling a couple of them before the assembly of the saw. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the program. It's very much appreciated.

@acutabove_woodworkings

Thanks for contacting me. I can honestly say that the Laguna line never really came into consideration for me and to be honest, I'm not really a fan of them. I don't like the way they look and I find the adjustment knobs on most models to feel a little cheesy. I saw the Rikon in my local woodworking store and only gave it a seconds glance as I wasn't in the market for one. Over time, I started to get the itch for a new tool and decided on a bandsaw. I decided to look a little deeper into the Rikon and either get it, or write it off as a choice. I played with it at the store and the knobs and adjustments seemed rock solid. It also had the spring loaded guide and thrust bearings which appealed to me. Not being able to find much on the web about them, I basically gambled on it and hoped that it would be fine and I can say that I haven't regretted that decision one bit since getting it. It is a solid as it feels and I love the way it performs. All other band saws over the years have been a pain to change blades but this saw is fantastic. Quicker blade changes due to easy release tension and easy set up bearings and quick, responsive blade tracking. Drift adjustments in the fence, spring loaded guide and thrust bearings, under cabinet storage, low profile and over-height combination fence, rack and pinion table and blade guard adjustments....I mean really, how could I not love it. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Just got mine today, thanks for your very informative videos on this fantastic bandsaw. It was your videos that convinced me to buy it. I'm confused with what you actually did off camera to square the back of the blade. I would have liked to have seen that. Anyway, my square sits exactly like yours with a gap at the top, so the table needs to come up at the back of the blade. Did you loosen both large bolts on either side of the trunnion or just one and which small hex bolt(s) did you adjust? Both sides of the trunnion or only one? I'm assuming you adjusted clockwise on the small bolt(s) to raise the table but its a matter of which ones?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 жыл бұрын
You will need to loosen the larger hex bolts on both sides of the trunnion. You don't have to loosen them very much as a little goes a long way. On either side of each of the hex bolts, is an indentation and in those indentations are Allen key bolts. One on the front of the trunnion and one on the back. You will need to loosen or tighten those Allen key bolts, to either raise or lower your trunnion (tighten to raise, loosen to lower) and once you are happy with how level your table is from front to back, you need to tighten the middle hex bolt (set bolt). This can be a little finicky as it will take several tries to get it right on the money but it is well worth the extra time to do this. It was never filmed because you are pretty much working blind and cannot see the bolts that need to be adjusted. I hope this helps John. I start showing the bolts and adjustments at roughly 9:00 into the show. Let me know if you need more information. You can either contact me here or get me in a PM over on my channel's facebook page.

To be completely honest Frank, I haven't checked for an adjustment of the rack and pinion but what I will say, is that depending on which way you are moving the table, the rack and pinion works great, or it needs help. When tilting the table, the weight of the table works against you and I have found that if you give it a little help by taking the weight of the table as you rotate the adjustment know, the rack and pinion works great. Lowering the table back to its 0 position or flat position isn't a problem as the weight of the able helps the rack and pinion. So I guess you can say that I have found a way to work with it and I'm just fine with that. I think I will check for adjustments tomorrow though, when I'm in the shop. Hey there Martin. Thanks for contacting me and for the kind words on the show. I can honestly say that there isn't a thing that I have found that I don't like about this saw so far. It has more than adequate power and I have been able to re-saw 9" wide material in a variety of species (walnut, maple, poplar etc) with no issues or stalling at all. I know that the blade has a lot to do with that but without the power from the saw, the blade can only do so much. The spring loaded guide bearings (including the thrust bearing) make setting up as very quick process and I can spend more time working and less time fussing with the blade setup. I find the rack and pinion to be very smooth and works well and the saw is nice and quiet in comparison to my older saw. Although I haven't had an opportunity to use the 120 VAC plug that is at the back of the column, I intend on installing a work light and utilizing that outlet so it is a nice addition that I am sure will come in handy. All in all Martin, I am still loving this saw and haven't had a single issue. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I buy it again if I knew then, what I know now? Yes. I don't have a single regret. Thanks for the video! Purchased mine a month or so ago, and I'm having trouble using a 1/4" blade. I can't get the upper bearing assembly to go far enough back so the teeth are in front of the side bearings and not rubbing against them. This is with the gullets riding on the center of the upper wheel's crown. I'm hesitant to track the blade even more forward though. Do you think that is ok? RIKON says the machine can accommodate down to a 3/16., but with a blade centered on the wheel (or even back a bit where they recommend) I can't see how that is possible without ruining a blade or the bearings.

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this Jacob. I have used the saw many times with a 1/4" blade and I track the blade so that it runs centred on the upper and lower tires. With this centred tracking, I've never had an issue with being able to adjust the guide bearings to be just behind the gullets. I feel that there is something else that is not right here. Was the machine calibrated and setup properly in. every aspect? Was the blade squared to the table front to back as well as side to side? Is the table set up properly to the frame and lower brackets? Pictures tell the story better than words. Maybe if you could send me a few pictures in a PM on my facebook page, it might help to diagnose the problem a littler further.

@@stevev8698 I am heading out to the shop soon and will check mine to see what the difference is between the front and the back. Having a difference of 3/32 is not a problem as long as the fence is square to the table. However, if you are running thinner stock and ripping it using the fence, it could slip under it (if you are cutting stock that thin). Because the higher section is at the front face of the saw, it sounds to me that you could adjust the fence rail to be a little lower as there is play in the holes that the fence rail mounts in. I'm thinking that this will at least get it much closer to, if not parallel to the table. I hope this helps.

@@acutabove_woodworkings Hi Kenny. Thank you again. Let me change issues if I may to a much more serious problem. I’ve talked to Rikon several times about this and they have not been able to solve the problem. I use a 3/16” blade almost exclusively (probably 99%of the time). I did that with no terrible problem for about six months. (Since I got the saw.) Now, however, I can’t get the 3/16” to track right. Actually, I can’t even get it to stay on the wheel. It takes what seems like a huge adjustment on the tracking knob to get it to start to move/adjust, then it races over the crown and falls off the wheel, even if I make several turns (hard to count exactly how many full turns) to get it to stop (I have tried small incremental turns, they have no effect.) Then it reversed course, goes over the crown and falls off the other side- even with 2+ turns if the adjusting knob along the way. At Rikon’s suggestion I have replaced the tires and adjusted the lower wheel to try to get it to track exactly parallel with the upper wheel. That causes a similar problem- even a minute adjustment (about 1/8 turn of either the 6 o’clock bolt or the 12 o’clock bolt) causes a huge shift in where the blade tracks on the lower wheel, as in on one side of the crown or the other. I have it to about 1/4” parallel now. That’s as close as I can get it. I’ve also tried a number of different blades of different brands with the same results. Any thoughts? I’ll call Rikon again tomorrow but so far their advice has not been helpful. I’ve spent several hours trying to get that size blade to trac now. A 5/8” and 3/4” track ok but are not cutting right. I know that sounds like a blade tension issue- I’ve spent a lot of time on that too. I’m running the blades at between 1/8” and 3/16” deflection at Rikon’ suggestion. As you might guess I’m out of ideas, not to mention pretty frustrated. Sorry to send such a long message but obviously each of the adjustments discussed above have to have been addressed. (There was no obvious event that made this problem start.) Any suggestions you may have would be very welcome. Sent from my iPhone On Sep 12, 2021, at 10:21 AM, KZbin wrote:

@@stevev8698 For starters, adjustments on the lower wheel should only be done in extreme cases. Next, there should never be a time where you would require to turn the adjustment knob 2 full rotations to get a blade to track. The fact that you make several adjustments, only to have the blade go nowhere and then suddenly, it shoots across the tire, over the crown and off the wheel, tells me that your adjustment mechanism isn't responding to your adjustments. I would suggest cleaning any dust and dirt out of the mechanism and then lubricating it. I have had issues with band saws in the past acting like this and because of that, with each minute adjustment of the knob, I tap the wheel at the top and bottom gently with a rubber mallet or the palm of my hand to get it to seat properly before checking my blade alignment. If you aren't sure what I am referring to, you can check out my video on blade changes on the Rikon and I demonstrate it there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl7OfmWmnt6NqaM I would definitely give this a try as your issue seems to be with response from your adjustment knob. Not your tires. Not your coplanar adjustment of the wheels. As soon as you said that you rotated it two full turns and then describe how it reacted, that was my first thought. Let me know how that works. As for your fence, as I said, it sound like you need an adjust to your fence rail to level out the fence. I checked mine today and it is level with the table. I also took a picture of the plastic piece that I was referring to earlier but you would have to contact me via email to see that as I can't attach pictures on KZbin. It is a black plastic piece that is bolted into the bottom of the extruded aluminum fence that allows the fence to ride smoothly on the cast iron without scratching it up. Check for that piece. Try the rail adjustment and then give the tapping of the top wheel during adjustments a try and let me know how you make out. Rikon's customer service is pretty good but I have to wonder about their knowledge of the machines. After all, their customer service reps are just going by a list of things to try sort of like telephone support. I'm pretty sure that their practical experience with the machine is next to nil.

Ken - I loved the video as it was extremely helpful. I do have one question though. At the place I bought the band saw from the woodworker that sold it to me told me to set the bearings about 1/16th from the blade. I saw that you actually had the bearings touching the blades. Is there a difference or is one better than the other?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 жыл бұрын
There are many different ways to set up a band saw and it all depends on personal preference and performance of the machine. I learned my method years ago and the guide bearings are actually not touching touching the blade. I close them in until they are touching and then I back them off ever so slightly. It's about the thickness of a dollar bill or a piece of paper. I do the same thing with the thrust bearing behind the blade. The guide bearings will spin while the blade is in motion because of the imperfections in the blade the basically kiss the bearing and get it spinning. I have always had great luck with this method, whether it be for live bearings like these ones, or guide blocks like are in some other saws. I can't say as to whether or not the other method is better, because it isn't the method that I have ever used. I can see where it would allow extra twist in the blade but if that is what the operator wants, then so be it. There is a really good book out on the market that can tell you everything you would ever want to know about the bandsaw and I absolutely love the book. It is called the Band Saw Handbook and it is an awesome read. If you get the chance to check it out, I think you will enjoy what it has to offer. There might be a bit of play in the blade guard, but once you lock it down with the knob on the back, it should be pretty much solid. A little bit of play is acceptable as the guide bearing are completely adjustable so you can compensate for that. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in Kevin.

I do have a question in case you’ve come across this issue. When I get my upper wheel tracked perfect I find the blade teeth are hanging off the lower wheel. I’ve tried everything except trying to manipulate the lower wheel which I have no instructions on. 🤔

It almost sounds like your wheels are not coplanar. There are instructions in the manual for adjusting the lower wheel as well as adjusting for coplanar setting of the wheels. If you don't have a manual, you can get one online from rikontools.com I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

Thanks, I will inquire about a replacement manual. That’s the only thing I could figure yet I was reluctant to start adjusting without instructions. Wise advice much appreciated.

@@e.t.preppin7084 No need to request them. They are available for free download on the website. Here's a link to the 10-326 manual. www.rikontools.com/manuals/10-326.pdf

Great videos on assembly and setup. Should have searched for and watched these first. The printed instructions were hard to follow and the pictures were hard to see.

hi |Ken magic video, just one point i noticed that you did different to what i have learned, aka Alex snodgrass videos, on blade tracking, he maintains that the bottom of the gullet of the blade should be in the center of the wheel, other wise the blades wanders, as the teeth are not supported, and if it is done correctly both the upper and lower guides can be wide open and the lade will still cut straight and true any thoughts on this ??

There are many different methods to set up a band saw John and I'm not going to say that Alex is wrong. I will say that his method works for him and the method that I have shown, works for me. My suggestion to you, is to try them both and see which one your prefer. In as many procedures and tools in woodworking, there are an equal number of methods and preferred setups. I hope that this video has at least helped you choose which one is right for you. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
