Putting an end to much speculation, the highly anticipated 350cc (cubic centimetre) motorcycles are on the verge of making their debut in Bangladesh. After years of discussions and deliberations, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal officially announced the decision during a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on September 7.
The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) had previously recommended increasing the maximum engine capacity for motorcycles to 350cc. This move has received widespread support from avid motorcyclists and motorcycle import-manufacturing companies alike.
Arif Raihan Opu, the senior editor of Bike BD, one of Bangladesh's most prominent biking community blogs, said: "There was no cc limit on bikes around the year 2000 or earlier. At that time, bike lovers used to import high-cc bikes to Bangladesh, which is not possible now. We hope that in the future, the government will lift the cc limit on bikes."
Who are 350cc motorcycles for?
Syed Mohammad Iqbal, a content creator for MSI Vlog and a well-known figure in the country's bike community, told Dhaka Tribune: "Some people ride bikes for life, while others ride bikes as a hobby. We certainly do not expect anyone to go to the grocery store with a 350cc bike. Those who are very passionate about bikes should consider adding them to their collection. We also expect after-sales service and maximum customer service from the companies."
The impending arrival of high-cc bikes has generated both excitement and apprehension within the biking community. Many individuals are concerned about the potential cost of spare parts and maintenance for these powerful machines, as well as the availability of service centres across the country.
Naveed Ishtiyak Toru, an experienced content creator, said: "We are fortunate to have experienced service centres and technicians in our country. However, bikers encounter challenges when seeking motorcycle servicing outside of Dhaka. With the introduction of new bikes into the market, there may be an adjustment period for the first 6-7 months. IFAD Motors is already setting up a factory in Chauddagram, Comilla, beside the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for the production of the famous British motorcycle brand Royal Enfield.
IFAD Group Chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Tipu told Dhaka Tribune: "We aim to commence commercial production and distribution of four Royal Enfield models, namely the Royal Enfield Bullet, Meteor, Hunter, and Classic, within the Bangladesh market by July 2024." bangladesh motorcycle cc limit
He said they have invested Tk150 crore into the production of Royal Enfield motorcycles in Bangladesh. Around 30-35% of Royal Enfield's production machinery will be manufactured locally, with the entire manufacturing process being overseen by international experts.
IFAD Group Vice Chairman Taskin Ahmed highlighted the immense enthusiasm among bikers for Royal Enfield's high-cc motorcycles and said: "We are committed to introducing our locally manufactured motorcycles to the domestic market at the earliest opportunity."
He also said: "Until recently, motorcycles with an engine capacity exceeding 165cc did not receive approval for sale within the country's market. However, following this recent decision, besides IFAD Group, high-cc motorcycles from other manufacturers will also have the opportunity to enter the local market."
