The "I'm a good person" system does not match what is happening and what Riley did, reason why the attack isn't stopping when Joy reinstalled it. The panic attack started to subside when the new and versatile belief system was allowed to be installed, allowing Riley to accept the mistakes she did as this was what she truly needed to do in order to move forward. Truly a tearjerking moment. Makes you realize that you really have to accept every messy, beautiful part of you.

Yeah. It’s like lying to yourself. Saying “I’m not good enough.” Then coming to the conclusion that “I’m a good person.” As a way to make yourself feel better isn’t going to help you. Joy realized that in the first movie, Sadness, even if negative, is needed so people can grow. Anxiety wanted Riley to change and become better, and not focus on what good traits Riley had. Joy wanted Riley to change and become better by focusing on what Riley’s good traits and ignore the bad things. But both are unhealthy for Riley. You can be ambivalent about yourself, and believe that you are a good person and a bad person at the same time. I relate to this so badly. “I’m a good friend.” Then immediately, “I’m a terrible friend.” And “I’m selfish.” Then “I’m kind.” It’s literally what growing up is. Everything, even how you see simple concepts like yourself become more complex and less easy to define.

One of my favorite parts is right after this when the movie highlights how to calm down from an anxiety attack or a panic attack without saying a thing. Focus on what you can see, touch, hear, smell, focus on what's going on around you and not what's going on inside of you. And the movie shows that and doesn't say a thing but gets that point across so clearly. And it's important knowledge too, in case you need to calm yourself or someone else down. Perfect example of show, don't tell.
