The Uranium Suite | Ride the Cyclone Animatic

This was my final for my last advanced storyboarding class! And as of this premiere, I've officially graduated art school with a BFA in storyboarding and 2D/CG animation!
I haven't actually seen Ride the Cyclone so excuse me if it takes some leaps from the established lore. I based the character designs off of a combination of the Broadway casts I researched and the Cyclone design off the Loop Gap rollercoaster and of course the Coney Island Cyclone. I just made this because it looked fun to make in my head when I was Animatic Daydreaming™ and it was!

Because the amount of comments is getting a little annoying, yes! The style does resemble The Owl House! :) If you look at my channel, I've been making Owl House content for a while and it's natural for the style to bleed in, haha! Not a bad thing at all.

I have two unfinished TOH projects I may decide to finish up one day. But my PC broke around 2 months ago so I haven't been able to make much of anything since :( (But.. I do have another animatic coming in maybe in the fall, but it isn't TOH! I've gotten really into Telltale's The Walking Dead games lately,,)

I just noticed (this might be a stretch) At 1:25 when the worker is giving thumbs up to somebody, Ricky isn’t looking at her. The frame also pauses for a moment as if somebody was supposed to react and give her a thumbs up back. This might be the implication that Jane was also on the ride but she’s not visible since nobody remembers her after their deaths. If that’s the case that’s so genius

At 1:34 you can see 6 people sitting in the cart - so the hint of her being there is neat Edit: Interestingly before the wheel breaks off, you see only five people in the cart - and later on as well. Maybe she died way earlier than the others or fell out of the cart before and no one noticed?

​@@z2ynfrom what i know: jane is the last one to die. You can hear it on their song. Jane is always the last one to finish screaming. I believe it's because no one remembers jane so she is basically invisible during the ride.

Glad to see another great animatic from you, it's very good and beautifully done! I always find it interesting to see different interpretations of media in another format than it was orignally made in. Even if I've never seen the musical, I love how your use of symbolism and storytelling gets the gist of what's happening across fairly well. The spinning shot of the stars before the rollercoaster car came back down was chilling, alongside the whole sequence of the decesent itself.

I’ve rewatched this several times today and it manages to get me misty eyed by the end, such a masterful animatic!! I was already a huge fan of your TOH animatics and to see you bring life to the cyclone soundtrack is really magical. If you continue doing more boarding work with musicals or anything close to those that would be stellar, you already nail it every time, but I’m looking forward to any project you end up following next bc you always put so much love into it!

I love how bittersweet their faces are at the beginning. They seem to be enjoying performing, but they don't love the town as much as the lyrics suggest. By the time their performance ends, Mischa looks absolutely disgusted, Noel is depressed, Ricky is sad, and even Constance and Ocean look disappointed.

Found out about this musical because of a piece of Owl House fanart and I've listened to it a bunch on Spotify since. It's funny it took your animatic for me to actually realize breaking at the loop section would cause a trajectory that arcs harder than the sort of Roller Coaster Tycoon flyoff I always pictured.

In my opinion it should be "hopes" for Mischa, "dreams" for Noel, and "Thoughts" for Ricky. In the musical I don't think Ricky minded being disabled, he clearly has a lot of thoughts, while Noel literally says he dreams of being Monique in post war France, Mischa clearly has hopes to meet Talia, and honestly Ricky more so strikes me as lost in thought by comparison to Noel. I feel like Noel created Monique Gibeau because he could openly express himself as her and also live an exciting and chaotic life in a post war era, and what better way than to express your sexuality than to be a prostitute? Idk, I can't help but feel like Noel fits better in dreams but maybe that's me, it does make sense for Ricky too of course, he too created a dream world like Noel, I guess I just connect to Noel more as a gay person who has struggled with the same thoughts as him (Minus the prostitute part. I perceive this to be Noel's reason for wanting to be Monique Gibeau, its not actually confirmed in the canon universe but this is my head canon for this character since its never debunked either)
