IT HAS BEEN A BUSY SUMMER. WE CUT THE OLD SUSPENSION OFF AND ADDED A LATER MODEL PETERBILT AIR RIDE TO IT. ALSO PUT THE FRONT AXLE FROM THE PETE ON IT. ALONG WITH THAT UPGRADE CAME HIGHER GEARS IN THE REAR END AND IT WILL DO 70 MPH NOW. POLISHED WHEELS REPLACED THE 5 SPOKE DAYTONS AND IT NOW HAS A SPRING PARKING BRAKE REPLACING THE OLD TROLLEY TYPE HAND BRAKE THAT WAS PLAIN SCARY. ALSO NEW BRAKES WITH SLACK ADJUSTERS . AFTER THAT I ADDED THE 5TH WHEEL BACK ON IT BECAUSE THE METAL ON THE OLD FLATBED WAS WASTED . FINAL TOUCH WAS LOTS MORE CHROME , LED LIGHTS AND QUARTER FENDERS. THANKS FOR LOOKING !

other than punting that silly horn into the bushes, what a great truck. I can just imagine sleeping on that little bunk after a long hard day. What a wonderful place America was in the 50's and 60's and this truck is running proof. Love it

imo the cannonball was the most beautiful truck ever built. got to agree, that train horn sounds absolutely ridiculous.

You might be interested to know that the 1958-59 TV series “Cannonball” was a Canadian / British co-production filmed in and around Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It featured American actors, Paul Birch and William Campbell. Although I only remember scenes from two particular episodes, I did have the opportunity to watch recently other full episodes. As a boy I loved trucks, and this was to me a really cool show!

Few things make a more glorious mechanical noise than the 6-71 Detroit diesel. And i'm not talking really about the exhaust. Just the noise the valves, etc. make when you give it a little throttle.

With the Peterbilt suspension, that's getting pretty close to a restomod build, which would be nice to see with a lot of those classic trucks

California hay hauler. There were a lot of these Yamahas around when I was a kid. Most were upgraded to 318s. I even saw a couple of them in the 70’s that had 8V92s in them.

You’ve made some good changes and improvements...maxi brakes, air ride, air horns, etc. How much did you cut off the frame? And you changed the front axle as well? That makes it all look better...Budds all around! 🤩 Do you have any pictures of it when you first got it? I’m picking your brain a little because I have a 51 REO that I’m pondering air ride for a single axle, Budd wheels all around, converting it back to a semi. 🥰Do you drive it frequently? I’m wanting to drive mine on daily basis if needed. Love your truck. It sounds great,too.🤩

It had an old spring suspension and Dayton wheels and just a trolley type parking brake so I wanted it to perform better and be safe . It is the same length and we kept the original drive shaft. Also changed the front axle too from the same donor Peterbilt. I used to drive it a lot but now maybe just a few hundred miles a year . Thanks so much for watching !

I had always thought the cab tilted forward like typical cab-overs until I saw this video. At footage 4:55 I saw one of the cab mounts where the cab is bolted (not hinged) to the frame.

Detroits were like Harleys, they poop to show you where they were. The ones I herded would use/leak a gallon of oil every 3rd day. They also contributed to my hearing loss.

You shortened the frame? Does that mean it had a tandem rear end? If you shortened the frame, then you had to shorten the drive shaft? Why would you shorten the frame? Wouldn't that make it ride harder?
@rileydog362
@rileydog362 4 жыл бұрын
The frame is the same length . It had a spring suspension with an old brake system and Dayton wheels . We cut the frame to remove all that and added the air ride. The original drive shaft is being used . Thanks for watching .

@rileydog362, it might be simplistic to ask, but it would be great if you ran through the driving and shifting of this truck. Curious about the pattern, choosing gears to start off in when under no load vs. hauling a trailer. I saw another video of a GMC crackerbox but the shifting was not shown too well, and it seemed he rowed through 5+1 before the speedo hit 20 mph. Just a tutorial of your driving experiences and how-to's. Cheers!

Very nice! Thank you for the update tour. Can you remind me again, on what you decided to go with for the rear ratio? And, are you considering taking out a few leafs from the front? (Looks like 9 still there) Since it likely no longer sees 10 - 12,000 pounds anymore, and would ride so much better.

Rear is 4:11 I believe . Originally 3:73 The front is quite heavy and rides good on the front axle. The problem was the rear would bounce on a large bump and smack you in the back. The problem has gone away with the air ride . I have had it up to 70 + on the freeway and handles nice now .

Thank you. Some day, when you get a chance, and go to town with the truck. We'd love to see an over the shoulder video of that ride. If you would please. This would give everyone an idea of the shifting that is done, alone with the scenery, and just how bumpy the ride is.

Could this possibly be the same 59 GMC that I sold in Tucson in1994 to a gentleman in Connecticut or somewhere close back east? Mine was very short and I used it to tow mobile homes until I couldn't take the lack of power steering anymore! Mobile home parks are very tight and I would fight that steering back and forth for hours. I will never forget the sound of that screaming Jimmy! Still have a ton of pictures from back then. Will share if you're interested. Some things look identical. You have done a beautiful job on this truck. Amazing!

Hi; This one came from Illinois. If your truck was blue then it went to Jim Semon in Ohio . He polished the rims and used it for show pulling a Nickle Plate Road van trailer. Not sure if he still has it though. Thanks for looking ! I would love to see your pictures.
