Thanks a lot Nick, your analysis and interpretation are very thorough and accurate. I actually discovered Coleridge's poem in 1984 thanks to IRON MAIDEN's song on Powerslave album ; I was in Junior High (in France) at that time and I can still remember my English teacher in awe listening to me reciting passages of the poem. I didn't tell her how on earth I had come to know exerpts by heart (!) but now I can say it made me love English 'romantic' and 'gothic' literature.

Actually, he (the Mariner) believes that the albatross brought the fog/is responsible for the fog, which is why he shoots it.
