The song compares the storm to the American military in World War II. But this song is not a song of resentment or hatred. It is purely a requiem song to remind the Japanese people of the sad facts that happened in the past. The storm came in the spring when the deigo flowers were in bloom. The storm is still going on in early summer when deigo flowers are in full bloom. I met you, my beloved, in the sugar cane field. In an air-raid shelter underneath the sugar cane field, we said goodbye to you, my beloved, forever. Please, Oh Shimauta, be the wind that blows across the sea with the souls of the dead, and return to “Nirai Kanai”, the God Realm that lies beyond the far eastern sea. Please, Oh Shimauta, become the wind and bring the sorrow of Okinawa to the people of Japan.

Shamisen is exactly a Japanese traditional instrument, but what she plays is “Sanshin”, which is a traditional instrument of Okinawa (or Ryukyu island)

"Shima Uta" is actually a song (somebody here mentioned it's a requiem) about a sensitive issue in Okinawa--World War II and the sacrifice of the Ryukyus to save the home islands of Yamato (Japan) from an invasion by the Allies (mostly the Americans). It's a metaphor-filled song--in the first line, the "deigo"--the official flower of Okinawa--is mentioned, and they say that the more deigo blossoms seen, the more storms would come. "The Storm" happens to symbolize World War II ("The deigo blooms, and the wind blew, and the storm came"). Rimi Natsukawa is playing the Sanshin (not its descendant, the shamisen), which is indeed made of python skin. It's not easy to export the sanshin outside of Okinawa (sorry, Tim) due to the endangered status of the python whose skin is used in the instrument. She and even THE BOOM (the original singers) is playing it to remind everyone that this song is about Okinawa (since the sanshin is the musical heart and soul of Okinawa), along with the nearly-all-Uchinaaguchi (Okinawan) lyrics. Yep, when you hear her sing the song, close your eyes and, immediately, you're transported to an island paradise.

This song is a war song. My favorite lyrics are “uuji no mori de anata to deai uuji no shita de chiyo ni sayonara”(ウージの森であなたと出会い、ウージの下で千代にさよなら) The meaning is to “meet you in the sugar cane field and goodbye forever under the sugar cane.(in the air raid shelter) It means that a loved one died in an air raid shelter. I’m sorry I’m not good at English.

この歌の意味は、沖縄決戦で沖縄住民が逃げ回ってウージ(防空壕)で死を覚悟して手榴弾で自害した方々の当時の状況を歌詞にした歌です。 この歌を聞くと涙が出てきます。
