Free! took inspiration/ was based on a light novel called Starting Days, which was a story written by Koji Oji, and won an honorable mention award in one KyoAnni contests in 2012ish. T(Also because were tlaking about novels- theres also a Free! novelization book- which are volumes that give extra insight/ scenes on episodes from season one)
