Rina Sawayama has been called ‘the future of queer pop music’.
The Japanese-British singer speaks to the BBC’s gender and identity correspondent Meghan Mohan about her frustrations with the music industry, how her sexuality informs her art and growing up with racism in the UK.
She also reveals, for the first time, the deeply personal and devastating inspiration behind her album.

The interviewee was more than willing to get the free publicity and score some sympathy points. However at 17 a choice is a choice. Blaming her choice on someone else because she regrets a relationship much much later is pathetic.

This interview was aired the morning Rina performed the Seattle show and the show was so emotional and beautiful. I could feel her passion and healing through her performances. She is truly an amazing performer and a beautiful soul 💗 Hold the girl is so special to me because when i first listened to it I felt so seen and I didn't feel alone. Her music is truly euphoric. Rina deserves the world 💗

to anyone who is blaming rina for what happened to her when she was 17: i hope that if you ever have children, that they never get manipulated into a relationship with their 30-something year old teachers. not just because it's disgusting, vile and perverse of a teacher to do that to a student, but also because you've clearly shown here that you would rather call a victim "attention-seeking", "naive", or "lacking accountability" than call a predator a predator. any child who has ever gone through that trauma would only suffer further at the hands of parents as shitty as you. no student should ever have to go to school worried if their teacher will make romantic/sexual advances on them. school policy and laws (people love to point out that age of consent in the uk is 16, but it's been illegal for a teacher to have sexual contact with a student under 18 since 2001) exist for a reason.

Rina, I’m so sorry you went through that kind of abuse (9:32) . Thank you for sharing your experiences through your brilliant and artistic songwriting. You are brave, and your songs are relatable, relevant and cathartic for child abuse survivors. Again, thank you for sharing your painful experiences through art with the world.

there are so many special moments in this interview and i always appreciate rina for her honesty and vulnerability. it takes courage to face your traumas, revisit it through creative outlets, and to share it with the masses. hold the girl has got to be one of the bravest and rawest pieces of work i’ve encountered, and i felt her intensity as it mirrored my own. i resonate so deeply with the dissonance of being an asian diaspora and tending to the inner child who has been a victim of adult(s) who took advantage rather than protect us. so proud of rina, her inner child and the woman she became ❤️✨

As a straight male who has gone through child abuse and has seen many close friends of the LGBTQ community go through so much, it hurt a lot to watch the video. I've always had a lingering understanding of what she meant in her music, and it's why I admire her so much. I hope there's nothing but happiness for her, or anyone struggling with such pain.

I have mixed parentage, and have faced similar attitudes that Rina has regarding being profiled as a Japanese tour guide. However, when people ask me questions about the different countries in my heritage, it's usually because they are genuinely interested in them, and trying to fill a gap in their ignorance. If I feel like it's a tokenistic conversation, I'll say something like "I wish I could tell you more about X country but I've only been as a child...maybe check out Y for more information." I haven't had many of these interactions, as people usually have decent social skills and don't racially profile you. I think Rina's experiences demonstrate the types of social circle that she runs in, where people have less experience socialising with people of varying ethnicities.

I love how eloquently she expresses the frustration of having the pressure to 'represent' a culture that might be your family's, but it's not really yours. There's way too much impotence put on race, when really it's culture...race is kinda made up, people are not different creatures they just have shared traits from ancestors being born in a location and breeding with others from that location... it's not like dogs, people are not different like a Chow Chow verse a poodle.

@6:05 Rappers lie about their age too. Nikki Minaj has been shaving off 5-7 years until recently when ppl found out she is in her 40s. It's no about the genre, it is about the gender. Men are told they are never too old for anything, even younger women (i.e. Al Pacino with a woman 60 years younger). As a woman, if you are with a man 5 years younger, people treat you like a pariah or make fun of you for it.

@11:00 I wonder how much of the "slut shaming" she experienced was actually due to her being Asian and having had an illicit relationship with a Yt teacher in his 30s. She said she went to Yt schools and was objectified for being Asian, so it stands to reason that she wouldn't be viewed as a victim as much as a Yt girl would. Asian women are often hyper-sexualized in western society. Also, England has a law that 16 and up is legal, although they are considering changing it.
