Great video Pete, very clearly explained. I have a question - could you have not done the cross connection test also to find rhe fault?

Very good example , may be worth numbering the sockets so any new learners can see the direction of the ring final as you move from one socket to another

Have you ever come across a cute little dead mouse with burnt teeth??? Little bastards always do it somewhere very difficult to get to.

Hi, if I see two 2.5mm cables at a socket and I have continuity between the earths can I assume it's a ring circuit and I'm able add a spur from this to a new socket? Thanks

How do you do this test when using singles which the legs are not marked please
@sparkipeat22552 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, you would have to identify the cables by tracing them out physically first.

In a real life scenario, it’s not so obvious to know how the circuit has been wired, in the video the break in CPC could just have easily been at the DSO to the left of the CU. I sketch out all the sockets and just like in the video, I connect the line and CPC together and record the reading at each socket, I then disconnect the line and CPC and connect the line and CPC of the other side of the ring and record though too, the break will be at one of the sockets with the highest reading, if the socket is spurred then go to the socket with the second highest reading.

Nice one pete👍 On a test rig such as this one, with an obvious wiring route visible on the surface, this method works a treat. I suspect it would be a lot more difficult in a real house situation, where someone else had previously wired the circuit. With say a ring feeding 2 different floor levels, and the route of the ring being unknown. But this method would point you in the right direction of which sockets to remove first. Cracking video pete keep them coming👍

Cheers Daddy B, thanks for getting involved. Thought about that. Let's say it's a Periodic instead and nothing is marked up to make it even more of a challenge. Three rings, only one has the break. For the two good rings we can connect L-E or any combo at one end and identify all the socket on that ring. Then we're just left with the dodgy circuit and follow the procedure. Never an exact science but you havin' that our kid? 👍
