Ive been photographing jewellery for 27 years and created a workflow by trial and error since photoshop edition 2. It was very clumsy, my camera was a Fuji S1 with very low, even hopeless resolution but with a LOT of work I managed to pull out saleable images. I’m now retired, (not by choice), but I was shooting directly into LR making basic changes and then using my limited skills in PS5 to complete each product. The work was/is tedious, boring and very complex, I was happy to finish 15 products a day before going partially insane spending so much time 15 cm from the IMac screen. I hated the work but did it when no other work was available. I enjoyed following your workflow and learned a few more techniques that would have saved me many hours of time. Ironically I am called upon to create “heritage images” for elderly clients which requires the same technique I used on jewellery. so I may give your method a try. But its always difficult to negotiate a fair price for the effort despite the education I give my clients.

Have you tried building this from tracing paper and some kind of plaque transparent? That way you'd be able to shoot directly throw the cone. This is also a great way! Both this and Karl Taylors light cone are great ways and I can't wait to test them out. Great straight to the point video : )

I have viewed hundreds of product photography videos. Many offered solid instruction, some were just plain bad. This video is by far the most professional, detailed, and clear instruction I have seen. However, depending on how much post-editing you choose to do, the work can be quite tedious. Of course savings masks and other parts of the editing process will help save time when working with batches and for future work. Since this video was created five (5) years ago I have to wonder if this level of work is only necessary for things such as catalog work. Hard to imagine this level would be needed for a jewelry shot on something like Etsy.🔘

@fenrox71263 жыл бұрын
You mentioned an average F number for pictures, what about ISO or shutter speeds? I have been taking these kinds of pictures but a lot of the white gold and diamond pieces almost look out of focus or like metal with how dingy the pictures are getting. I ahve a lightbox so I can set the light however I want, its the settings of TV, AV and ISO that keep messing with me!

Use different brushes, tweaking the settings to your taste. Brushing was also the best method I've discovered by myself. Speed and quality can be achieved by this. But, do you have other ideas on making it realistic while doing it fast?

hello, thank you for your time. I was wondering how did you change the inside, and outside. after using the pen tool, you chose the paths, and then on the new layer you hit the rectangle, then a black box came up, but then it just change to white, how did you do that? it's at the first 20 seconds of 12:04

Awesome information! Thank you for sharing. I've been shooting and editing jewelry for a few years now in a very similar way, but I learned some really cool new things from your video, especially the lighten mode with the low opacity brush. I've been using the low opacity brush, but the lighten makes it faster because it doesn't go over the edges. Awesome!!! Also, for clients who don't realize how much actually goes into a photo like this, I can now send this video to them to show them that is, in fact, a very detailed and time-consuming endeavor.

Have you ever seen how the Big Mac or Whopper looks like on television or internet ads? It's like picture perfect hamburger so juicy and tasty, yet when you order it looks like shit, but who cares... you got what you paid for and life goes on.
@interdec4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear you. What we actually see is the best possible representation of what the product could be...but isn't...just as in the other respondents Burger example. The thing to bear in mind, I guess, is that a macro photograph shows up details that the eye can't normally see, and so we can end up with a product that looks worse than we see it with our naked eye...and so it has to be "fixed up" to an extent. This video, for me, is well over the top. It's effectively a painting of the original item, digital art I suppose; undeniably no longer a photograph. You should see what turned up at the airport as my "Russian Internet Bride', compared to the photographs. 😩 She turned out to be quite a good cook though, and an absolute demon between the sheets, so it's all good in the end!! 😊
