RING Siren Design Issues both Siren and Adaptor

In this short video, I describe how badly designed the RING siren is with the optional adapter they promote will work with it. The adaptor comes with two connectors that won't fit through the water proof grommet and would require tampering with, thus voiding your warranty. Other issues about the powering of the siren are explained in the video

Just installed my one. My distance between the power adaptor is two far the power socket. I also found that it was polarity sensitive. I guess I should have checked with my multimeter. However, it does not seem to do any harm to the unit if you connect then in reverse. I did buy a rechargeable battery so I had assumed that it would trickle charge the battery and that it would be only be used during powercuts. I can't believe I went through all the hassle to route a cable to the siren, for the unit not to use it for all power requirements. Biggest design flaw is the door secured by three screws. The door should have a strap on it so it can hang in place when you are up a ladder changing batteries. The three screws should be captive screws, so they can't be lost. I hope Amazon/RIng review these comments.

NB: The power adaptor does have positive polarity, meaning it will only work one way, NOT neutral as I was told by RING.... it appears one is positive and the other is negative!

I've installed many ring products and have found the build quality and design very good. HOWEVER, I do agree with you they need to go back to the drawing board with the siren and I found that rubber gasket most annoying as it came off and you need 2 pairs of hands to put back in place.

I didn’t have any of these issues. Mine has been up for over a year. I have a rechargeable battery pack. It’s hardwired to power (the wires for the adapter fit through just fine one at a time) with the original batteries in it. It works as it should., I have never had to recharge the battery pack. It stays charged plugged in. The Ring logo light comes on every night. 🤷‍♂️

1:55 I think you got it wrong there. The app specifically says under the "Outdoor Siren LED Settings" that "Requires Quick Release Battery Pack OR hardwired power source" So it should light up with just the hardwire. It is only with the D batteries alone that it does not light up.

Not on the instructions it doesn’t, and I’ve tested it, you have to have both, again poor design by Ring

You don't need both. I'm using the d cell batteries and the power pack. Mine illuminates at night driven by the power pack. Tbf don't see it lasting too long as it illuminates all night. But I guess if I didn't have it illuminating then it would last longer. I'll try the hardwire option soon @@DM43685

Hi all. I have just purchased a ring alarm with an outdoor siren. I've hardwired the outdoor siren with the second gen power supply and it powers the siren AND the dusk to dawn light. FURTHERMORE if I add a quick release battery, the second gen power supply also charges it. FURTHER AGAIN, the quick release battery on its own will power the siren and dusk to dawn light. This is all despite the Ring website and app siren setup still stating you need 2 power sources for the dusk to dawn. Looks like Ring has quietly fixed all the issues with the outdoor siren.

My question is if I just use the D batteries and Quick Release Battery Pack with solar panel, is it possible to activate the Dusk to Dawn feature for long time in UK?

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone. But the doorbells require ( if the need be) AC power , whereas the siren requires DC power

From what I know the doorbell works from mains Power however, I believe you have to reduce the voltage using some form of regulator otherwise you’re putting 240 or 120 if it’s in the US through it which might break it but don’t quote me on that. Siren works off a DC adapter which powers it, again that could be regulated… I made this video some years back, but I’m hoping Ring have watched it and made design changes.

Best way is to have all 3 supplies in but instead of a PV panel, buy a pv panel and cut the panel off and use the cable going into a wago then other side get a 5v1a power supply and cut the DC barrell off and match the pos and neg in the wago then you have a hardwired charging supply to the rechargeable battery instead of an ugly and unreliable pv panel.

could you not just plug in a mains : 5v dc power supply into the solar panel socket together with a rechargeable battery?

You also not also loop the mains cable to the solar charging connector which will in turn change the battery as well

@@DM43685 but it will resolve your issue for the long term, whats £65 quire compared to having to keep going up a ladder to change the battery or as people get older you have pay someone to do it, £65 quid and a bit hacking the wiring is tiny in comparison, I think anyway and that my plan as soon as I get one

Just search for any 12v (min 1A) power supply. Most will usually come with a round pin adapter but you can cut it off and just use the two cables to connect to siren terminals. Edit: Ring officially uses 24V 0.5A power adaptor. But you can get any as long as its 9-28VDC (minimum 12W) power supply.
