I'm a bit older and I remember those good quality American made T-shirts that were 100% cotton, like back in the 80's and 90's. Those T-shirts were top quality; thick and durable. Maybe I'm not buying real ring spun, but these new T-shirts that say ring spun seem cheaper made, a lot thinner, and cost more. Why is that and what makes them better? They seem to fall apart easier.

It's really hard to say without seeing what shirts from those days you are talking about. Although like with many things, as manufacturing is mostly overseas and companies are heavily geared towards maximizing profits for investors, it wouldn't be a huge surprise that quality compared to those times have changed. It's a race to the bottom in many respects. Now all of that being said, ring spun will likely feel less substantial as it is going to be made of thinner, longer threads of yarn that make them feel much softer and lighter. This doesn't mean that ring spun is less durable though. The durability comes mostly from the cotton strands used and the spinning processes at the factory. Also different brands have different quality control, so while two brands might both be "ring spun", one can be extremely durable and the other isn't. Great question!!!!

@petra I feel that brother. It's sad. As supply and demand goes up, quality goes down. It sucks but I guess that's our way of living now. You should be able to start your day with a great quality pair of underwear. I think that would help with my mental status, knowing my gentleman parts are supported with quality goods.

Dope clarification! Ring spun vs combed ring spun. Which would shrink the least when when washing with hot water or drying? I know it’s best to wash with cold water but on washing machines it’s auto set to hot and ppl forget to change to cold and almost everyone does dry their shirts even if they wash with cold water. So which do you think would shrink less with that said?

Ring Spun Cotton would most likely shrink less than a standard Cotton t-shirt. As for ring spun vs combed ring spun, I would imagine combed ring spun may shrink a little less, but they are probably pretty similar. Also some shirts come pre-shrunk, so keep that in mind. Thanks for the question!

What is Gildan "heavy cotton?" It feels and looks different from other Gildan standard cotton t-shirts. I really like the rougher feel of the heavy cotton Gildan shirts.

Gildan "Heavy Cotton" is standard cotton you will find in the Gildan G5000. It is not Ring Spun or Combed and so it has shorter strands of cotton that make up the yarn used and therefore is rougher because of the many small fibers that are sticking out. This will be less durable and not as soft, but like yourself, some folks actually prefer the rougher feel of the non-ringspun cottons.

If you are referring to the quote form, the drop down "soft ring spun cotton" would include both ring spun and combed ring spun cotton shirts. The purpose of that drop down is to get us going in the right direction to help choose the right shirt for you as there are many choices out there. What would be softer? Combed ring spun cotton or 50% cotton/50% polyester

Traditionaly I would say that the Combed Ring Spun Cotton would be a little softer than a 50/50 garment, although there are some very soft high quality 50/50 shirts out there. Also there are some pretty ratty 50/50 shirts out there as well. So it really depends on brand and style of the shirts you are comparing. To make a long reply short, both would be very soft as long as your buying high quality shirts.

does it mean combed cotton are 100% cotton? the bedsheet seller to me that combed cotton is added with other fibre and I did a burn test and it smells like chemical (same as how I burn the polyster material), so what is combed cotton consist of? confused.

which one is good for tie dye? the cotton combed or ring spun cotton?

We don't have any experience with tie-dying shirts so I wouldn't be able to give you a very good answer. The only thing I can say is that a higher quality cotton shirt such as a combed ring spun cotton shirt would be smoother than a cheaper carded open ended cotton t-shirt. If the dye likes rougher surfaces then the cheaper shirt might hold the dye better, but again we don't do any tie dying here at the shop.

If one wants to buy a nice heavyweight 240g tshirt. What type of cotton should I go with? Combed Ringspun? Supima? Does supima cotton have different types or is it just standard supima cotton?

Anytime you can go with Combed Ringspun cotton it will be nice and soft compared to standard cotton. It will cost a little more. As for Supima. What this is is American Pima Cotton. Pima Cotton is a species of cotton (long staple cotton that is very soft and strong. It's what is used in Egyptian Cotton. Again depending on cost versus quality, if you are okay spending a little extra, you can't go wrong with either Combed Ringspun cotton or Supima cotton.

Not always. These two different procedures are done during different times in the yarn making process. Combing is done before it's made into a yarn while Ringspun is the process of making the actual yarn. So there are combed standard cotton shirts out there but typically if it is combed it is also ringspun. Thanks for watching!
