The first sanctuary in Tignale (Italy) was built on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple, which was transformed into a castle during the Middle Ages. The oratory is mentioned as early as 802 as an important place of prayer and is mentioned four more times before the miraculous episode that gave rise to the present large church. The new sanctuary was built in the 14th century and frescoed by pupils of Giotto, as evidenced by the exceptional fresco of the Virgin Mary on the high altar. The stone bell tower was equipped in 1884 with five new, very beautiful bells, cast in Verona in the musical scale of E major. In 2003, a local foundry made a smaller sixth bell, used to emphasise nascent life.

The five main bells ring in concert, emphasising midday on the eve of one of the main feasts of the year, celebrating the Trinity. The bells rotate forming precise musical scales, following the traditional technique also widespread in the diocese of Brescia.
The small oratory was replaced by a large new sanctuary, built on top of the old structure. The sanctuary structure was enlarged four times in the course of seven hundred years, as the number of pilgrims had grown exponentially and is still very high today, especially associated with the many tourists arriving on Lake Garda. The sanctuary had great fortune after the miracle that brought an end to a terrible war; the Madonna appeared in a star and everyone stopped fighting. The church was adorned with Baroque magnificence in the 17th century, retaining some Gothic and medieval parts to this day. The latest restoration converted the church from Baroque to a more eclectic style, preserving the largest ex voto in Europe. Next to the sanctuary is an important prayer hermitage, dedicated to the memory of Cardinal Martini.
