I watched this telecast live. Being a Beatle fan I was really embarrassed. He was hyper, having trouble sitting still and talking fast and talking pretty much crap. Occasionally Parkinson would corner him with a question and he would sort of settle down and answer properly. He was not slurring his speech and talking slow as drunk would. I doubt he was only downing alcohol that day or during these years. He was living the jetset life and I still say he snorted a few lines to get himself up for the interview and to negate the effects of alcohol . Coke doesnt last too long so by the end he was probably coming down and the brandy was taking it's effect. Hence the drop sticks

The reason he dropped a stick was probably because like a lot of drummers, he’s had serious rotator cuff injuries to his shoulders that have required surgery - I’m a drummer , I’ve now wrecked both shoulders and had the tendons reattached and it affects your grip . Ringo uses his shoulders as left handed drummers playing right handed kits, often do because we can’t roll around a kit like a right handed drummer so a momentary lift of the shoulder creates enough “space” for us to get the left hand onto the tom tom. Give the guy a break - give him credit for what he’s achieved , not a couple of dropped sticks . He gave up alcohol years ago so he certainly wasn’t “ pissed” though he might be reading some of these comments.

I don't get why so many people feel the need to knock Ringo Starr. He has never to my knowledge boasted or bragged about himself as a drummer. As a drummer myself I would love to have done a small amount of the large musical work he has been involved with. The reason so many top drummers credit him as an influence is because of his unique style of playing, being left handed but playing the kit right handed he produced many drum parts other drummers struggle to replicate.

2 comments... #1 I wonder why people find it odd that Ringo was playing with another drummer. It'[s very common for him. Not always, but common. Even on his newer tours with the All- Starr band he has another drummer. He did on The Concert For Bangla Desh and even on some albums by himself and for other artist's, check out George Harrison's "Don't let me wait too long' From "Living in the Material World" #2 It looks to me as if maybe the hi- hat was not set at the right height. If this happens, sticks will fly.

In reply to Leon. Which is exactly what I was saying. Mitch was, indeed, an ultra talented drummer who could have played Jazz, easily. With flair, like you say. And if, as you say, McCartney preferred a rock solid drummer, then there is the proof that he was respected in The Beatles. Why there are folks about who disrespect Ringo, I just can't fathom. And for those not familiar with Mitch Mitchell who would prefer a different annalogy, then John Bonham would not have suited The Fab Four, either. Anymore than Phil Collins suited Led Zeppelin. Horses for courses, and all that.

@Earthtime39787 жыл бұрын
Not entirely accurate. Yes, of course another drummer plays when he is fronting the band, but many times another drummer plays along side him. When this occurs, Ringo plays a standard 2/4 time beat while the other drummer plays the the fills and moves around the drum kit .
@HankFinkle117 жыл бұрын
AJ Steele the reason is that two drummers can't play fills together. You don't play, do you?

It happens.......I've dropped my sticks countless times, it depends a lot on the beat you are trying to keep. When you have to play 1/16th notes on the HH, you have hold the stick loosely to get the bounce, if you tried playing with your wrist only, you would not last the entire song. Give Ringo a break here, it's not an easy groove at all.

Not only did he drop his stick but why was he even playing? The drummer behind him was playing. You could see sometimes Ringo wouldn't even hit the snare drum yet you still heard a snare drum. I think it was a recorded drum track too. That's why he's wearing head phones. He's just playing to a recorded track. But with all that said Ringo really was a solid drummer when he played with the Beatles.

Depends on what you call fake. I'm 100 percent positive he is not only playing to a track but there is another drummer playing in the background. You can clearly see that from this video can't you? There are a number of reasons why someone would play to a track but there would be no reason to be wearing headphones if he wasn't playing along to a pre-recorded track. I've been playing drums professionally for 35 years btw.
@mirrortime8 жыл бұрын
Steve, Yes, there's another drummer. Can you see that every time Ringo hits something, it sounds like it looks. I've been a drummer since 1971.
@spercoco8 жыл бұрын
Dean Prescott I'm not sure what your point is Dean. OK you've been a drummer since 1971 and I've been a drummer for about the same amount of time. Been playing professionally since 1978 and if you are questioning whether Ringo is playing to a backing track or not I guess you have just not done many gigs where you have to pay along to a click and wear cans on your head. I've done a few but never with two drummers; maybe a few times with another percussionist. So again; it's NOT all Ringo here. And yeah he seemed pretty fucked up dropping his sticks. Gee maybe that's why he had so much back up. Or maybe they just needed some instrumentation that was not there thus the need for the backing tracks.
