it technically is named after Mike Ilitch. "Little Caesar" was his wife Marian's pet name for him, thus the name of the pizza chain and arena.

NIce! See, that's why I love when fans chime in! Did not know that! Although I still say something other than little Caesars would work though. Ilitch Arena still sounds better IMO. But now that I know it was his nickname it makes me like it a touch more.

@@_TheRinks I was hoping they'd work "Olympia" into the name, since the arena is owned by the Ilitch's Olympia Entertainment. Y'know, since they didn't sell naming rights; I figure Ilitch Holdings paying Olympia Ent. to just be taking money out of one pocket and putting it into the other.

Olympia Arena or Olympia Stadium pays tribute to Detroit's past hockey cathedral, AND rolls in Olympia Entertainment as the corporate entity to sponsor the naming rights. It was too perfect for me, and I was bummed when they went with Little Caesars Arena. BUT! Calling it LCA is much nicer, and it's a non-issue to me now.

I went to 3 consecutive games at LCA and stayed at Greek Town Casino Hotel, the walk was easy and I never felt uncomfortable downtown. As for the arena, I thought it was stunning. I have been to the Joe and the memories are what made it special, we just need to break LCA in with another streak.

Yeah, their sports venues are amazing. The fact that it's a big contrast to the rest of Detroit isn't lost on me. Believe me IMO no public funds should ever go to funding a rink. But that's the way it goes for over half of sports stadiums.

They didn't replace the seats, they just put seat covers on the back of the seats. The Pistons crowds are getting larger and larger and I'm sure they will remove the seat covers next year. I went to LCA to see the Pistons vs Wizards and the crowd was huge. I love LCA, especially the club seating. With all the food and drinks you want are included with your ticket. Wings games are great, every seat is a good view!

Stealthy Mongoose The whole arenas seating was changed to Black Seats. The seat covers aren’t there anymore. Because you were able to see a tiny bit of red still on the seats. All the seats for the 2019-20 season and for the future are black seats

Fun but sad fact. It cost 3.5 million dollars to change all 19,515 seats from red to black. The red cushions that were removed from LCA were thrown out as trash.

Amazing arena. So much parking. With the 2 billion dollars going into Detroit it is a perfect place for it. Google just recently put a headquarters inside the arena. You can see the offices when your inside the arena.

Nope, I think in John Olivers Stadium episode he mentioned that Detroit passed funding for this project at the same time filing for bankruptcy! Yikes!

I'm from Windsor, and the Little Caesars arena is the only nhl rink I've been too. My favourite part is the roof, but I can't believe they are making the seats black. The red seats make the place so vibrant.

One problem I've heard about Little Caesars (If you can call it a problem) is that there's so much to do and see in the arena concourse that there's not a lot of people in their seats! Even if the Red Wings have a sold out game it might not look like it because a ton are out in the concourse!

The reason that the seats are empty is because there are too many clubs. The people in the lower bowl go to the clubs. Thats why they are making the seats black.

As a Detroit fan, I hate it. The upper bowl is the most uncomfortable seat I’ve ever been in. I’m about 6’1 and the entire game my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me, it was so steep I couldn’t see part of the rink from the gondola blocking my view, they made it to be an event venue rather than a hockey rink, like the joe was. There wasn’t a bad seat at The Joe. Unless you are in the lower bowl or mezzanine, you couldn’t pay me to go watch a game in the upper bowl. Their parking structure is insanely overpriced, granted there’s plenty of places nearby, but it’s funny that they wonder why people aren’t filling the seats when everything involved in the experience of going down there and watching a pistons or wings game is overpriced. Red seats looked amazing IMO and now these black seats look fucking god awful. Chris illitch has no clue what he’s doing. He needs to sell the wings and tigers to owners who actually care how the team does not just how much money they make/save.

Agreed. LCA is aesthetically gorgeous; however, I would take the atmosphere of the Joe any day. Although LCA has a great concourse setup, the seating bowl---both upper and lower---leave quite a bit to be desired. (I include the mezzanine as part of the upper level because that is the concourse where you access it.) I sat in the upper level when there was an open house for people to tour it. It is, in a sense, very impractical. If done correctly, the LCA could have been like the Palace of Auburn hills with 2-3 concourses. With the Palace and JLA gone, my personal favorite now is Chicago's United Center. 3 roomy levels and 3 concourses (although the lower and upper are narrow), and my go-to level is the Lexus Club (middle) level. Great wide carpeted concourse, great dining options, and roomy seating. LCA, although very nice, is very basic in the seating bowl outside of the club sections.

Olympia Stadium was smaller ( 14,000 ) and a very intiment setting. I was only 12 when l went but it was very loud and exciting. The concrete floors would vibrate from the noise when the Red Wings scored,

Update 10 months later, they have changed the seats from red to black completely, seems somewhat similar to the oilers change as well but mainly due to attendance, sucks to see the character ripped away from the building.

It's not that they can't attract big crowds, it's that there are so many places to hang out, eat, and drink inside that no one wants to stay in their chair and watch mediocre Pistons and Red Wings teams. Last time I went, I went to District Market after the 1st quarter of a Pistons game and literally never went back to my seat for the rest of the night.

I've read this quite a bit as the reason they can't fill the place. But I find that hard to believe with a huge hockey market like Detroit. In Edmonton they still pack the house despite having crappy teams for the last decade. but then again there isn't much else to do in Edmonton in the winter. haha

@@_TheRinks it may be a big hockey market, but all those seats visible during a game are corporate owned. I met the CEO of one company who has 5 tickets in the 3rd row behind the glass and he said he barely uses them. When they do go, they usually sit in the VIP area under the stands eating food, drinking, and watching the game on the tvs.

The Joe was like your favorite dive bar that never disappointed, you'd go there with the boys for unforgettable nights. Little Caesars Arena is where you take a first date that you would eventually marry and divorce. I miss the Olympia Club at the Joe, dirty and horrible service but strong drinks, and you get to party with former players. Shout out to Darren McCarty and Joe Kocur, guys knew how to send it.

I've been to The Olympia, Joe Louis and Little Ceasers. Personally l prefer the design of the Olympia the best. The fans are right on top of the players as the 2nd deck over hung the lower bowl. There wasn't a bad seat in the house.

The LCA is a masterpiece on how the average fan can be separated from his wallet (the LCA has pretty much anything, and everything a fan could/would need while attending an event there - food/drinks/merchandise/etc). Awesome place.

In finland we go only watch the game because our arenas are so boring... but how about this arena! wow!! i would go like 6 hours earlier than the game starts and would spend money and enjoy the atmosphere. and after the game i would spend second 6 hours drinking beer etc.

It says "Seating for hockey is around 20,000" in that guide. And it's close, but it's official seating capacity for hockey is 19,515. Only the Bell Centre officially cracks 20,000 at 21,273.
