Fun Fact: I once had a Sega Game Gear version. It was based on the Sega Master System (from what I can tell) and was called "Revenge of Drancon." Sounds like a sequel, but the first few levels are nigh identical to the Master Version (Never got far in the master version.) Might be worth checking out if you like the game.

Oh the memories this all brings back. Wonderful comparison, always had my suspicions about these two but could never fully make sense of the similarities so clearly. Why I never got around to picking up a Master System back in those days is beyond me.
@Conversational13 жыл бұрын
@AceEbb77 This arrangement was a fairly common one at the time actually and was often used by developers to get around Nintendo's draconian "you're only allowed to develop games for our system" publishing prerequisite. This just happens to be the most famous occurance, but Sega actually also did this for the sequel "Wonderboy In Monster Land" which was ported to the Neo-Geo and various other systems simply under the title "Monster land" or an alternate title.

At first I thought it's a 8 years old kid talking but after seeing you at the end- I now know it's a 13 years old girl >xD hh jk, anyway, great job with the comparison and historical review! :) I was only familiar, back at that time, with Adventure Island for the NES (which I thought was really fun! specially II+III since they've added those Dinosaurs rides which was so much cool and fun!), but after growing up I saw that there's this game which looks incredibly similar to the NES game I used to play but I never actually gave it that much of attention, until now, after the release of "Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap", which pushed me to finally understand where is this game is coming from! So thanks for this great detailed video!

One other thing is that Wonder Boy and Adventure Island had Next-Gen installments, The Genesis had Wonder Boy in Monster World, which had a blue-haired hero named Shion traveling through a different Monster World, while the game retains references to past Wonder Boy Games. SNES had SUPER Adventure Island 1 and 2, which are different games that starred Master Higgins. The first one plays like the NES games, and the second one is similar to Wonder Boy, where he wears armor. GEH?

The Wonder Boy series just far outshines the entire Adventure Island series as a whole. My favorite of the Adventure Island game is actually number IV that was never released here and actually took a more open RPG format like the Wonder Boy series.

@D3stinySm4sher thats because she posted it to digg, et al, and has a pretty voice. What i'm surprised about is that she didn't talk about Master Higgins origins: in japan, its "Famous Takahashi," and was one of the first game-celebrities, famed for his ability to hit buttons 16 times per second. Master Higgins supposedly vaguely resembles Takahashi.

Is Midnight Wanderers, from Three Wonders, anyway related to Wonderboy? My cousin and I used to think their gameplay was kind of similar (the weapons were similar, the way your character was respawned everytime he died, the use of a familiar/option, the very design had a similar theme to later instalments of wonder boy...) anyway, it's a game I recomend you to play (on MAME, he, he, it's REALY tough...), it has some really cool baroque graphics.

Wonder Boy obviously so much fun While the basis of the game is so similar,I honestly enjoyed the SMS version more.It was more forgiving,was more pleasant to look at,and I didn't find the control issues to overcome any of this.If I could only somehow graft on the NES music,it would have been perfect.The SMS extended graphic capabilities really shine The major changes are that the NES version contains hidden eggs,bigger variety of items and an extra powerup.The SMS version contains more stages

You should also check out the brazilian versions of the two WB sequels, for the SMS. They altered the games to include famous comic's characters here in Brazil, from "Turma da Mônica" comics. I still have the version of WB III, called "Turma da Mônica em o Resgate". That was one of the best SMS games, in my opinion.

Ha ha I remember having this game. I used to take my master system to mexico as a kid because I would get bored. I got all my cousins hooked on wonder boy, but I was the only one to beat it. I later played Adventure Island but I liked the graphics and music from the sms more and that kept me from getting into the nes version. I ended up leaving my sms in mexico with my cousins. I'm going next month to mexico for a wedding. I gonna see if I can bring it back home.
