Rua do Catete is located in the neighborhoods of Glória and Catete, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It originated from Caminho do Catete, which had existed since before the arrival of the Portuguese and the French in Rio de Janeiro in the 16th century.
The name "catete" originates from the Tupi indigenous language and means "water from real forest", through the combination of the terms ka'a ("forest"), eté ("true") and ty ("water").
Rua do Catete houses the Múseu da República, also known as Palácio do Catete. It is an example of Brazilian neoclassical architecture from the end of the 19th century, it was one of the first buildings in the city to be illuminated by electricity. The Palace was the seat of the Republic for a period when the Brazilian capital was Rio de Janeiro.
