What always amuses me about the Keirin is that the guy on the motorised bike always looks like a pizza delivery driver who has taken the wrong turn but refuses to leave the arena

Awang is a fantastic specialist in keirin. He doesn't really have results in neither sprint nor 1km. He has seen him live several times and he is a fantastic rider ..

OMFG this was the most stressful experience I've ever had of watching an Olympics. Having said that, Laura Trott and Jason Kenny are basically a definition of relationship goals

I suprised there's not more talk about Jason and Laura, it's so cute that two gold medal cyclists, who are both joint the highest awarded medalists for Great Britain fell in love. You'd think it would be unrealistic in a movie!

Such a different vibe from Kenny where he clearly knew he was the best in this field. Contrast with Tokyo where he won via a tactical masterstroke to compensate for his lack of form.

The bikes have nothing to do with it. They could easily ride 'normal' track bikes for world level competitions. I would say primarily that it's a matter of priority and selection - to qualify to ride Olympics and Worlds you need to ride sufficient world cups and other ranking events. Keiren riders in Japan are obliged to ride full time in the pro keiren races and I guess don't get dispensation to do qualifying races. That said, it is odd that you don't get at least some of them going for Olympic glory - I suspect that the ones which would be good enough are very well paid in Japan.

the keirin is basically a 600m sprint that starts at 50km/h. the pace bike is needed to get everyone to that speed without fatiguing the competitor who's in front.

that, plus you can overtake the cyclist in front of you but you still gotta be behind the derny's wheel. no one did that though because the 3.5 laps sprint is more deciding.
