S3 E3: How To Rig A Fly Rod Video

In this episode of RIO's acclaimed "How To" series RIO sales manager Zack Dalton explains all there is to know about setting up a fly rod. Zack's tips show how to match the rod, reel and line to ensure you have a balanced outfit, and then he shows how to correctly attach the backing, fly line and leader to the reel.

Hey. Do you have any good tips for how to know when you have enough backing on before you add your fly line. Especially for bigger 8wt plus reels.Thanks.

You spool on your line first, then fill up backing. I like to leave 6-8 mm free space. Spool all that off again and spool it on in the right direction. This is best done on a big lawn or with a solution like Omnispool. Or you can do it indoors by draping it first over one chairback and reverse it by draping it over another chairback. Just be careful to avoid tangles.
