Kids want to be able to change the dolls clothes, they can't really do much with a doll that already has an outfit painted on. I hate that these companies use the excuse that kids don't care; that's not true, and insulting to children's intelligence. Children can tell what toys are higher quality and more fun. I'm betting if given the choice between one of these, and a vintage Barbie with removable clothes, and long hair...most kids would choose the old Barbie.

All I wanted to do with Barbie as a child was change the outfits and play with the hair. And I used to hate how they couldn't bend like my brother's G.I. Joes. Kids these days aren't so different. I think it's just cheaper to paint the clothes on than make them from fabric.

SOOOOOO TRUE the apology was for ONE REASON and ONE REASON only, a sad, FAR TOO LATE attempt to get back on Mattels PR list. She has gone to great lengths to criticize them every step of the way for approximately 2 years now and I think it finally hit her that this has completely burned the bridge (or any future bridges) with them. Her sense of entitlement is also ridiculous - on more than one occasion she's stated, "can you believe there are some doll companies who don't send me dolls for free"? That alone caused resentment since she had to purchase them. I have officially stopped watching that channel - its a thrown together bumbling mess that little to no thought has gone into and it has only gotten progressively worse. @@SlMONSAYS Say what you will about her thoughts on her apology video, but to say she's faking things to get on Mettal's good side is just speculation on your end. Time and time again, she has said that she really doesn't care to be on any PR list because she will still buy dolls she likes regardless. Her "complaining" was nothing more than playful tantrums. What I got more from her video was an attempt to be less negative for being so critical after so long. It gets tiring to be like that towards something you love, and she genuinely loves the Barbie brand. I am a Barbie collector and I don’t buy new Barbie’s because they are boring/cheap quality/over priced. The ONLY new Barbie I have ever bought was a “babysitter Barbie” and it was only for the stroller- not the Barbie. It’s so sad- I wish Barbie’s today were what they used to be- fancy clothes, nice rooted hair, articulations. Remember Mattel your best selling Barbie was “totally hair Barbie”? It was because of the beautiful extraordinary hair, in fact I remember begging my parents to buy it for me when I was young. Now if that totally hair Barbie would have also had a gorgeous ball gown I am sure it would have sold even more. Surprisingly enough I actually became a Barbie collector because I wanted my daughter to have the kind of Barbie’s I had when I was young- it made me do research and start collecting these vintage Barbie’s. Unfortunately for Mattel all my purchases are second hand and never directly from Mattel. I am not the only doll collector out there and Mattel should make a line that just focuses on quality- they should see how much people are paying for their own quality vintage Barbie’s and step it up to sell Barbie’s again to collectors first hand. I know I may be old fashioned but I also don’t like the joints on many of these new articulated dolls- I wish Barbie’s had the “click knees” like they used to- and if they made “click knees” I am sure they could make “click elbows” as well.

This whole "negativity" makes me think of The Sims 4. A lot of diehard Sims fans don't like this installment, and I was always "eh, it's not my favorite but I feel like people are too negative". Then I realized... I've never paid a single penny for this game (yes, I pirate it, sorry for being an evil person but I just can't justify the price and EA is not hurting for money). Of course, my opinion isn't so negative. Likewise, a lot of people who think there is too much negativity around Barbie today are probably used to getting free samples from Mattel. When we don't pay for something it's easier to look past all the flaws, no matter how "genuine" we try to make our opinion about it.

I refused to play with the dollar store versions of dolls. Perhaps that means I was spoiled as a kid (I know I was), but I couldn't stand low quality. Especially when their bodies and limbs were noticeably hollow. Being able to change my dolls' clothes was super important to me. I almost always left their hair in the original styles, but I loved soft hair. I still have one of my favorite childhood barbies because her hair is absolutely silky. If my kid self saw the color reveal dolls, I'd ask for one, probably get it (again, spoiled), and never ask for another because of how disappointed I would have been with it.

Ok, story time. Sorry but I have to share. 😖 I’ve recently started my own little Dolls of the World collection, where not EVERY Barbie is from the official “Dolls of the World” line, but still represent a country in some way (such as the Meiko doll, Queen Elizabeth I, Marie Antoinette, etc.). But they’re all Special Edition or at least stay-on-shelf-and-look-nice dolls, and they’re all from the early 2000s. The quality is pretty good, the hair is great, the jewelry and fabrics are great. But I really wanted a good representation of Mexico, so I recently bought the 2018 Dia de Muertos doll. This thing originally retailed at about $100. Double the price of a Dolls of the World doll in its heyday, which sold for $50 in 2003. As some may remember, those were a comfortable medium between shelf-quality and toy-quality; nicer than “Flower Power” Barbie, more playable than Marie Antoinette. So Muertos being a “Special Edition”, I thought she’d fit right in. WELL!.... Needless to say, I was SHOCKED that this $100 Special Edition had the quality of a toy! The fabric of her dress was cheap, her “gold” jewelry was molded shimmer-yellow plastic instead of painted with gold chrome, her hairline is so high in the back that it looks like she has an undercut (interesting choice on a doll who’s hair is WORN UP! ??? ), I notice her head sculpt has no eye definition at all, it’s completely smooth and her eyes are only painted on, which actually gives it a strange look in person, and the flowers.... ugh... I knew the flowers were molded plastic but COME ON! The Meiko Barbie has fabric flowers in her hair. For a $100 special edition, they couldn’t give her something more realistic?? As I sat there removing all her jewelry to repaint them with gold chrome nail polish, I remembered the barbies I had as toys as a child; the intricate details of their outfits, the quality of their fabrics, and the real effort that went into making them as comparable to the life-size versions as possible, and that’s when I realized... my Barbie TOYS were better quality than this!! This was the quality of one of the “bargain” Barbies you’d find in really skinny boxes for maybe $7. The Barbie you felt more comfortable giving to your 5-year-old because you knew she’d only destroy it! THAT... is what I just paid $100 for!! Sold to me by a company telling me this is a “special” and “nice” doll!! 🤯 I won’t say she doesn’t look ok from the front (and from a distance), I won’t say I’m not happy to have her, but I will say I’m deeply disappointed and saddened that the only Special Edition Barbies I’ll ever feel good about buying again will be ones on eBay from the early 2000s... that I can never look forward to anything NEW from Barbie because I’ll never feel comfortable spending that amount of money on it. 😔 Seriously Mattel, make the toys affordable if you must, but do you really think the COLLECTORS wouldn’t appreciate the better quality, even if it is for a higher price?? P.S., the chrome nail polish didn’t work, by the way, because no nail polish is quite THAT chrome. So she’s the only doll on my shelf that doesn’t sparkle. 😡

I’m sooooo happy you are being honest with your video. ❤️🌈 I love Melissa’s videos as well, no shade towards her she’s amazing, but I honestly think she retracted from her original opinions on Barbie because she was afraid of getting removed off the Mattel PR list. I agree Barbie is the original doll I fell in love with, but the vintage barbies are where the quality was at. The modern Barbie brand has been horrible in recent years. And although yes there’s diversity, you can not dismiss the horrible lack of quality they have now. There’s other brands like MGA making diverse dolls with higher quality. How can Mattel treat Barbie so low? It’s ridiculous. And we can’t keep pretending it’s not happening. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mattel has been slacking on the quality of the things...when they diversified the line they made the quality go down... like this new batch of fashionistas the plastic of the dolls hair and shoes or accessories(including the fashion packs) are low quality is thin and rubbery like the quality of cheap dollar store toys

The quality of the Color Reveal just keeps getting worse and worse. They're fun to dip in the water and reveal, but afterwards they're not cute. I think they are WAY too much! $15-20 USD for one 🤮🤮🤮 They should be like $7-8 USD. I agree that they should focus on the Fashionistas and the Career dolls. The other lines are awful, especially Dreamtopia

The ''Reveal'' thing done right, i think it would go with the ''Failfix'' line i think its called, in wich you get to basically give your doll a spa day and change her face, reveal her outfit ( 3 different optional results) and make up. You know Wich doll you will get but not wich Version of her, and you can change her face as many times as you wish

What a refreshing take on Barbie. I was excited to see the new birthday wishes Barbie because it looks better than what I've been seeing. But it's sad to see Barbie losing out to poor quality. They rely too much on her being a classic and not enough on keeping her truly fresh and original. Also, the lol tots have removable fashions and accessories and some with rooted hair. Barbie of all brands should be able to keep up.

Even tho the color reveal and fashionistas are meant for younger people we're still seeing the same type of quality in The Collector lines as well. Even in the collector lines you're paying $50 for something that's terribly printed on, low-quality and cheap feeling. Mattel has access to all these different skin Shades and face molds yet only has made the Barbie extra and BMR line.

I’ve loved barbie since I was a kid. But the painted on clothes, the lack of even the articulation that we had in the 90s, and now the crappy clothes, not to mention the cost, has far outweighed the diversity Mattel has brought in. Honestly I think Our Generation is more interesting these days and for the first time I’m thinking of giving up my collection. It’s so sad because Barbie has been part of my life for so long but honestly it’s crap now.

i said this exact comment on the other video and I'm copying it here because i agree with you you should not be compensating quality for diversity, also with how much dolls cost in europe they aren't worth it. this is my comment on the other video honestly this makes me sad, its honesty i feel like a slap in the face to other ethnicities and races when you say you cant have both, are other races not worth quality? should an asian child be complicit with a bad quality doll, because the company cant be stuffed making their dolls articulated with good clothes? should a middle eastern child be happy with a doll that fair enough looks like them but cant bend its knees? how much fun is that I'm sorry Melissa i love you but this honestly feels wrong. All children should be able to find quality dolls with diversity. and i stand by it

i think the discussion of price level and inclusiveness is so important... what does it matter if the design has dark skin... different bodies or prosthetics if the target audience can't afford it or cant justify the price for the quality. if the doll is bad quality it wont hold up to a kid playing with it then you have to spend 20-30 dollars for it... thats ridiculous.

Barbie has seriously lost her identity. I totally agree!!! 1000% it's cheap, super disposable toys. Stand one of these, next to a barbie from the 80s or 90s and you can see. I personally buy much more mga now and not mattel. The barbie face moulds just look CHEAP and generic now. The small ones (Kelly's?) Remind me very much of enchantemals. All we want mattel is decent hair, articulation and real clothes. I will be holding on to every barbie I have because obviously the days of quality are gone. Fantastic video Joey 👍Don't worry bout being negative...sometimes things just need to be said.

I quite like the newer color reveal dolls because we are getting more metallic colors vs just matte colors but the prices they want for these is completely unacceptable. The absolute best color reveal dolls are the mermaid ones. Also I'll admit I kind of saw this coming because years ago I made a comment on Facebook saying that one day Barbie dolls will probably eventually come with non brushable molded hair and now here we are. Mattel really needs to get it together :/

If they ever decide to do all their doll/most with moldable hair they can just declare bankruptcy and give MGA the win. Mattel under estimate their adult buyer/fan if they think only kid and parent buy their stuff. Even kid will stop wanting mattel if almost every doll have compete molded hair.

When I was a kid, it was about changing outfits and styles. My favourite dolls were the Sharing Sisters Barbie set where you got Barbie, Skipper and Stacey and loads of different pieces to mix and match. I had diverse dolls (I had a pineapple scented dark skinned Barbie/Mattel branded doll, I believe she had a blue fabric bikini?) and the quality was beautiful. There’s no need to pump out 600 different VERY SIMILAR looking dolls, kids will generally have a couple they love and then want outfits and accessories. Maybe things like a pet/spouse/siblings but not just loads of the same doll.
